Your software doesn't take 2 minutes or more to do its rigmarole before the actual burn? Sure, the time Nero counts as the actual burn time can be 4 minutes. Or lower if the CD doesn't have all 700M filled. But it's BS.
My 8x took about 8-9 minutes to burn a full CD. Let's use 40x at 3 1/3 minutes. That
makes a 40x 2.7 times as fast, excluding the several minutes it always takes before the software starts counting the burn time.
I haven't burned any coasters either. But I have had CDs set to burn at 24x that ended up taking 7-8 minutes to burn. That's because of all the retries the burner did automatically. Watching the crazed flashing CD light and the listening to the plaintive mechanical whines was quite a treat. I hate to dump that stash of 8x blanks that I accumulated before the real fast burners got to be cheap.
Now for some arithmetic. The new burner are CAV. In othe words they have constant RPMs.
That means a 60x turns 60/40 times as fast as a 40x. So a 60x could possibly burn a CD in 2/3 of the time a 40x would. Or counting from 40x, a 60x is a 1.5x. It doesn't sound as impressive when you put it that way.
But regardless of the actual burn time, I don't think it ever took me less than 30 minutes to
set up a CD the way I wanted it before I clicked on the burn icon. So at best my time was reduced from 39 minutes to 34 minutes. For most people's purposes, burners got as fast as they needed to be when they hit 8x.
