Linky. Thanks for the info. I'll try it on one of the two I got from the Office Max deals a month ago.

That's awesome. Lots of people (including me) got the 32123S drives from the various Cendyne deals at Office Max / Staples.

If I remember correctly, Mt. Rainier is a more efficient packet-writing method. Does Ahead InCD or Roxio DirectCD even support it?

I wonder if this update also ups the read speed to 48x.

Successfully upgraded the LTR-32132S (XSOX) to a LTR-40125S (XSU1).

How to ..... OC-Freak's Firmware collection and MTKFLASH guide

Summary... from same site.

First make a boot diskette on a w9x/me/dos computer to use to boot the computer since these tricks must be done in real DOS.

Download mtkflash version 1.48 here.

Unzip mtkflash to the floppy disc or to a FAT16/32 formatted drive.

Now make sure that the drive that you are going to read the firmware from/write firmware to is connected to the main IDE controller and not to a secondary IDE controller card, also make sure that your drive is NOT configured as cable select(set it to either Master or Slave). Also write down/remember how it's connected.

Boot your computer from the diskette containing the system files and make sure that NO CD-ROM drivers is loaded.

Go to the same drive/folder where you have mtkflash.

To flash a drive:

MTKFLASH "x" W /B filename.bin

Where "x" is a number from 1 to 4:

1: Primary master
2: Primary slave
3: Secondary master
4: Secondary slave

W is to write a firmware to the flashrom.
/B is to tell the program that the input file is a binary file.
filename.bin is just an example. Write the name of your firmware file here.

This will again take some time, do not reboot, switch power off or something while the flash is in progress. Note that it's counting from 0% to 100% several times!

Maik, the original poster on the other forum said,

"when you will flash the firmware you must copy mtkflash and the firmware on a disk. you don't need a MS-DOS Bootdisk."

Now I'm thoroughly confused.

You do not need a boot disc but you need to flash it in msdos. So the easiest way (especially in XP) is to boot from a floopy in dos. I just upgraded my TDK veloCD 32X to Lite-on 40X .

i think the mtkflash and firmware files can be saved on your hard drive (you can save it on your MSDOS disk too if there is enough space). you only need the MS-DOS Bootdisk to boot your computer.

If you need a Dos startup disk and you are running XP, why not just select the "Create an MS-DOS startup disk" from the Format dialog box? No need for Win98, ME, etc.

Jeez, I haven't made a boot disk since the old'n dayz. I also didn't know you could make one with windows XP or 2000, or that it was just trickier. Thanks for the help guyz. ww4397, I'll see if that's there on my XP, spanx!

I just flashed my Cendyne Lite-On LTR-32123S, worked like a charm

I didn't feel like using floppies. I just copied MTKFLASH and the unzipped .bin file into C drive, booted to DOS (Win98's safe mode DOS prompt actually), saved a backup firmware, then flashed the CDRW from C.
Nero CD speed reports average speed increased from 26.x to 31.x. Burning a 70min CD with it saves me an entire minute. That's compared to another Cendyne Verbatim 32x, which performs similarly to this then Lite-On LTR32123S.

Off topic, but 32123 relevant. Got a Lite-On 32X from the OMax deal four months ago. I've burnt probably in excess of 200 CDRs. A month ago I flashed it to XSOX. Burned another 50 or so disks with no problem whatsoever. Only coasters were from El Cheapo Riteks. Last Friday I overburnt (817MB) a disk, and it wrote fine (read just fine in the Apex AD-1500 ... no pixellation ... Taiyo Yuden [thanx Hot Deals!]). I burnt a couple more after that one, and everything seemed OK.

Then on Sunday, I discovered that the CDRW no longer recognizes that it has a disk inserted, and thus can no longer read or write. Very freaky ... Windoze Exploder says that there's no disc there, Nero says "no disk", and CD Speed won't run. Drivespeed recognizes that the drive is there, and dumps the particulars about the drive, but indicates "no disk present", and the BIOS recognizes it's there, too, all with the right firmware. Just won't wake up. I didn't fart around with the system setup (Scout's Honor ... really). I successfully flashed to XSU1 tonite (well, success in that the drive still doesn't read, but it shows the XSU1 firmware). It doesn't make _any_ goofy noises, or at least I can't hear them.

Is this (drive not recognizing that it's got a disk in it a symptom of too much overburning (that is, the drive needs to be thrown away), or is there something I might consider doing to make it operational, at least as a reader, again? A switch inside, perhaps? If I were to pop the cover off, what might I fool with in the hopes to make it work?

Any help is greatly appreciated, please feel free to PM

Cran

Now, back to your original program, which is joined already in progresss....

Some of you may want to backup your old firmware before you flash:

mtkflash "x" R /B /M filename.bin

where 'R' is for read out the firmware and 'filename.bin' can be the filename (no longer than 8 characters) of the old firmware (like xs0x.bin) so it will be easy to find if you need to flash back.

The above should be used in conjunction with Scorpio's detailed instructions.

i just flashed my cendyne 32x bought from staples (was shown as a liteon drive in device manager). now the device is showing a 40125S, but the nero doesn't recognize it any more, the Nero asks me to choose recorder, the only option is "Image Recorder". Am I screwed? Thanks a lot!
