i thought it was only the 32125 that couldbe flashed.

i had a 32123s and it was a terrible drive, it worked with like only 1 of the 3 types of media i tried (8x rated, memorex 74min ones, died on fuji 48x rated taiyo yudens and 40x rated "great quality")

then again something must have been wrong with its smart burn stuff, and it was a newegg refurb.

if you can upgrade to 40125 you can upgrade to 48125, and get 48x btw. i had a 40125 memorex and you just flash the 48125 on it and it works fine.

If you need a Dos startup disk and you are running XP, why not just select the "Create an MS-DOS startup disk" from the Format dialog box? No need for Win98, ME, etc.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where in XP is the Format dialog box? Thanks.

The dialog box is a "right click" drop down option after you've selected the drive (i.e the a: drive) in Windows Explorer. The "Create an MS-DOS startup disk" is a checkbox option within the dialog. There may be other ways to access it as well.

hans, can you be a bit more specific? there are two version of the 40125... the 40125S and the 40125W. It is know that the 40125W can be upgraded to 48125W just fine but we are discussing the 40125S in this thread.

Just upgraded Cendyne (Verbatim) from Liteon 32123S to 40125S, and works great.
It now reads at 48x, which is great, but why? Is it now a 40x12x48x?
Old version of Nero, and all other programs instantly saw the drive as Lite-On LTR-40125S.

EDIT:
The drive has been great for most media.
Always burned at max speed (32x), even when using old 8x and 12x media at 32x, but did have data problems with the cheap 24x 700 meg Outpost (Lead Data) CDR's (the 50pk for $7.00). Imation 100pk (CMC) 32x for free after rebate and coupon from OD work great as well. Just the Outpost CDR's caused issues.

Only one small problem, my Nero version 5.596 sees it as a 40125S but still only show max of 32X burning speed, is this because I am using 32X CDs or should I be able to burn faster? Thanks for any help

Bit and others, the oem version of Nero that comes with your Cendyne burner is drive-specific. Once you flash from 32X to 40X, Nero won't recognize the "new" drive until you either download a later version from Nero's website or install the retail version.

TheCoop, try using a blank CDR media capable of 40X and Nero should provide up to 40X burn speed.

Well not really drive specific but actually speed limited. It will work for other drives as long as they are 32x or less. Updateing to 5.599 (free) will allow 40x.
Nobody has answered your original question as to whether or not one can go > 32123S > 40125S > 40125W and then presumably to 48125W and then to
heaven only knows what! Obviously one eventually reaches an overclocking stone wall. Is this harder on the drive and hence will fail sooner???? What is the limiting factor here? As I observed above the 32x and 40x were made in the same month. Don't know when the 48s were made.

You cannot upgrade from an S to a W - they are different chipsets, not interchangeable so you can go from S to S and from W to W but that's it

S = SST EEPROM
W = Winbond EEPROM

The Nero that comes with the Cendyne 32x Lite-ON drive isn't drive-specific. You can use it with any CD-RW. Keep in mind that it's not the newest version though, so for expanded CD-RW support (such as with the upgraded 40x12x48x), you should download the nero upgrade.

Yes, you can go from 40S to 48W. I depends on the firmware that the 40S has to start. 40S with ZSxx can do it. 40S with XS0x firmware cannot. I flashed my 40125S Memorex to 48125W Liteon because I had the ZSxx firmware to start. The 32S drive to 40s drive is using XS01(32S) to XSU1(40S), therefore not able to flash any further.

This was taken from CDFreaks:
LTR-32125W-->LTR-48125W, possible, mediatek chipset. [Not tested by me]
LTR-40125S (f/w XSUx) -> not upgradeable
LTR-40125S (f/w ZSxx) -->LTR-48125W, possible, mediatek chipset. [Personally tested]
LTR-40125W-->LTR-48125W, possible, mediatek chipset. [tested by alexnoe]
LTR-48125W: Not upgradable, mediatek chipset. [Not verified yet]
LTR-48126?-->LTR-48246?, most likely possible, mediatek chipset. [Not verified yet]
LTR-48166?-->LTR-48246?, most likely possible, mediatek chipset. [Not verified yet]
LTR-48126?-->LTR-52246?, Maybe possible?, mediatek chipset. [Not verified yet]
LTR-48166?-->LTR-52246?, Maybe possible?, mediatek chipset. [Not verified yet]
LTR-48246?-->LTR-52246?, Maybe possible?, mediatek chipset. [Not verified yet]
LTR-52246? (or 52326? ): Most likely not upgradable, mediatek chipset. [Not verified yet]

Like I said earlier, if you got a Lite-ON drive (32123S, no rebadging), then your version is not drive-specific. Yours came as a Verbatim, and unfortunately, those are drive-specific. It may be the same drive essentially, but it's Verbatim providing the drive and CD.

esquared is right. I was able to flash my 40X Verbatim to Liteon LTR-40125S (using mktflash) and then directly from 40125S to 48125W in Windows.

I just flashed mine. I haven't burned a CD yet, but the Nero CD Speed test shows 40X.

On the Mt Rainier subject...I understand this will give "drag and drop" OS supported functionality for CDRW disks. When will the OS support happen?

Try a different CD-r. Some cheap CD-r's will not spin as fast as newwer or better ones

Hopefully by WinXP SP2. Support for it wasn't in the recently released XP SP1. So in the meantime, it's mainly a novelty.

You can try this utility (Lite-On CD-RW only).... click and save
SMART-BURN Media Check Program

For CD-RW Drive, SMART-BURN may limit CD-R burning speed base on the information that check the media info & quality. You can use this program to know what media you are using & what speed limit is set by SMART-BURN. For more detail please link here.

Successfully flash my 32123S to 40125S. Burning is about 30-45secs faster, but a tad noiser.

Anyone know or tried to flash a 24x Lite-On?
