It worked fine for a couple hours then we noticed it got warmer in the house... the compressor outside has a non-spinning fan. We can hear it has power (a loud buzzing sound) but the fan simply won't spin anymore. Causes ?

check the wiring to the fan. possible you blew a fuse or a connector came loose.

also smell it, if it smells burnt you may have to replace your fan.

Eeek! I just got over some problems myself. Unit in the basement was leaking when the air was on. It's working now.

Unfortunately my problem didn't deal with the outside unit... dang

btw, hi

the wiring has good contact (one of the wires was taped up from a while ago and I re-did it to make sure it's still good).

Could it be a motor problem with these symptoms (the buzz sound) ?

Mine went out over the weekend and was fixed today. Unit inside was working, but the outside unit wasn't. It was buzzing but the fan wasn't spinning. $22 switch inside the outdoor unit was bad. Seems some ants (yes ants) got in-between the contacts and fuxxored it. >_<

yes it could. if it is the type of buzz i'm thinking it is an electrical arc at 120 hz. this means that the motor in your fan is probably shorting out. is the buzz about the same as a buzz from a fluorescent light (frequency, not loudness)?

i suggest removing the fan and hooking up a multimeter to it to see what kind of resistances you are seeing.

Your unit should have 2 capacitors, one is the start capacitor for the compressor, the other for the fan. You could have a bad capacitor or possibly bad fan relay.

I cut the copper wire that turns the A/C off and on with a weedwhacker last year. Easy to fix, except I didnt realize that there was a small amount of 'juice" in that wire.
