Centrino Duo = Core 2 Duo chips (Merom)?

I had someone ask me today what the difference or if the Centrino Duo chips were 64 bit and I kinda gave the WTF look since I had no idea that Intel started to refer to the C2D mobile chips as Centrino Duo chips...

So are all of the new Centrino Duo laptops made of C2D (Merom) chips?

I believe "Core Duo" = "Centrino Duo". Note the lack of a "2".

"Core 2 Duo" is the Merom chip, NOT the same as a "Centrino Duo".

Well when I visit this site: http://www.intel.com/products/centrino/duo/index.htm it tells me that it is now being associated with C2D. I just want to make sure I'm getting my facts straight.

I sit corrected. The way that page is written suggests to me that "Centrino Duo" is the entire series, which includes "Core Duo" and "Core 2 Duo".

Can someone confirm?

Centrino Duo are Dual Core Mobile chips.

its weird isnt it?

centrino core solo = core (1) with one core disabled (1xxx cpu model)
centrino duo = dual core, core (1). (2xxx cpu model)
centrino duo = dual core, core (2), (5xxx and 7xxx models)

hope that helps, its confusing as hell. centrino isnt a cpu, its the trademark intel has over the motherboard, cpu and wireless chipset that classifies a notebook as being centrino powered.
