Do you remember a deal on R-40 for $900 at ibm.com at the end of February ? It even included a mobile essential kit (carrying case, RF optical mouse, security cable, and retractable network cable) and free shipping. Anybody would think that IBM is a reliable company ? I thought so too. Their product might be. But at least for the ones who jumped on that deal, they were not that reliable or honest.
I ordered one on Feb-20. Got a confirm mail on the next day. so far so good. The only fishy part by then was it says that it doesn't have 256M SODIMM that I ordered and is on back order. It will be in stock within two weeks. But it also said that the expected shipping date is March-19. Fishy. But I heard that some of their notebooks are actually manufactured and shipped directly from far-east. Not a surprise these days when everything seems to be from China anyway.
But when I checked back their "order status" from their website, it never get updated. It always said that it will be shipped in two weeks until Mar-18.. one day earlier than the expected shipping date.
Meanwhile, the SODIMM is marked as "in stock" all the time at their website. You cannot do any notebook business without SODIMM because it is a common component. If I don't get my notebook, nobody gets.. that is if they are honest.
Well, to make the long story short, I called them several times and I still think I am a lucky one out of many who might have ordered because I got what I wanted, sort of. But I got the mobile essential kit a customer used return.. They didn't mentioned any and sent it to me without any compensation from their national returns center and it was manufactured 6 months ago. While they told me that the kit is on back order and will be shipped at the end of May.
Do I think IBM is a reliable company ? Are you kidding ? They even ate up a quarter of my harddrive for "emergency" that they didn't mention. I didn't get any CDs. If the disk fails ? I am on my own. I may need to hope that the disk will fail within next 9 months while the warranty is valid. why 9 months ? R40 comes with one year warranty and they ate up 3 months up-front while they didnt send the laptop. I hope I am wrong in math here.
