She basically gave his attorney an "attaboy". Would the judge have called it a violation of probation if he did this to a team mate on the field?

I think the judge is over-reacting and should have just found him in contempt, but that probably wouldn't have warrant the jail time so she ratcheted up the charge.

Slapping your lawyers butt is not how you express to the judge that you are taking your probation violation seriously. The lawyer got him a lenient sentence and the judge interpreted the slap on the butt as a celebratory move. I see nothing wrong with the judge refusing the plea agreement and the lesser charge, and instead imposing the full penalty for the probation violation.

Judges want to see you contrite and remorseful for your crime, not celebrating that you got off with a slap on the wrist.

If he was innocent and got a not guilty verdict, celebrating in the courtroom might be OK, but if you're guilty and got a light sentence, then it's common sense not to celebrate in front of the judge, in any manner.

Ho hum, I don't understand why everyone is making a big deal out of this. He's effectively a "class clown" and was trying to get everyone to laugh during a serious moment. She took that as disrespect and struck him down like the idiot that he was.

Johnson had already violated his probation for domestic violence. The judge was giving him a light sentence for the violation, but when he saw him slap the lawyers butt he interpreted it as Johnson either celebrating the light sentence or not taking the violation seriously. For that reason he refused the plea agreement, which was basically a slap on the wrist to begin with, and sentenced Johnson to the full month in jail.

No judge on earth is going to agree to a light sentence if they don't feel the defendant is remorseful or taking the crime they committed seriously. Celebrating before the lenient sentence is even official was just stupid.

I don't get why all of you are acting like the judge had a hissy fit and sentenced him to the month without cause. It wasn't personal on the judges behalf. From what I've read, Johnson was never disrespectful directly towards the judge.

Johnson showed a lack of contrition and remorse with his celebratory move, which makes the one month sentence perfectly warranted.

judges are supposed to be professional. They should not be able to give out jail time for personal reasons which is what this judge just did.

Pathetic and she should be disbarred IMO. If a judge can not be objective about situations, I don't trust them to hand out justice in this country.
