i got a chaintech vnf4 ultra mobo with amd64 3000. i have the stock for now but i am looking to upgrade. i was thinking of either a thermalright xp-90 with a 120 mm adapter for a quiter fan, or a zalman 7700-cu, or 7700 alcu. what do you think. i am looking for quiet but good proformance. 120 mm fans are great.

What kind of cooler do you have for your video card? You may look at going passive too using an Aerocool VM-101, so u might want to see which CPU cooler fits with that. My advice is to look at cooling on a system wide basis, ie match up the CPU, GPU, NB, and case cooling solutions, and see what fits physically, and air-flow wise.

i got have all stock on my system right now, stock for cpu, gpu (x-700) and stock north, which is passive. i am looking fo quiet, but if i wanted no noise i would get the zaleman water resevoir/pump, and go watercooled. but i was thinking of 120 mm fans like on the zaleman cpu coolers, or a 90-120mm adapter for a thermalright xp-90, because the xp-120 will not fit my board. i still want to overclock some like i did on my last system, it doesn't have to be alot, but i can't do t with all passive componets. i was wondering if anyone had a suggestion on what has worked for them.

Stay away from the Scythe "Kamakaze 2" becasue it is not compatable with the current crop of 939 form factor sockets. www.scythe-usa.com

Which is sad because it is a very well made, quiet CPU Fan/heatsink. You may want to consider a fan that has speed control.

I've also heard that the Panaflows are good fans.

I'd rather have the Zalman 7700, personally. I think i'm gonna grab one pretty soon. If you want a 120mm fan, i'd use a XP-120, so you aren't wasting cooling power. Even so, the Zalman is much cheaper and damn quiet.

How so? It looks like there's a cap that's going to be in the way of one of the spring clips... is that the problem?

The folks at Thermalright emailed a user over at pcper.com's forums, and told him that the XP-120 will be a very tight fit on this board, but that the XP-90 WILL work and has been tested successfully with this board (the VNF4 Ultra). Incedentally, the user who was emailed had already bought the XP-120, and managed to fit it to the board (he had to "lean" one of the capacitors in order to do it, but the board has been running fine since, with no problems and quite cool. Let me know if you want a link to the thread over there about it.

If you are looking for good cooling, and low noise, you might look into the Coolermaster Hyper6. This is the cooler I have on my board, and it fits fine (although it is a tight fit). The stock fan IS probably going to be noisier than you would like, but this can be replaced, and you can NOT beat the cooling this HSF will provide. My system is overclocked to 300HTT (which puts my A64 3000+ at 2.7GHZ, and it is running at 22 degrees C at idle, and up to 30 degrees C under heavy load in prime95! If you want additional cooling, a second fan can be added to the rear of the heatsink, to help pull out the air that the first fan pushes into the heatsink. Also, because of the way this motherboard is designed (with the CPU slightly lower and to the center of where most boards have it, and with the RAM above it), it provides EXCELLENT airflow for this particular cooler -- it sucks air straight in from the front of the case, and pushes it straight out of the back fans/vent. It is almost as good as the new cases with the "wind tunnel" design. The one disadvantage to the Hyper6 is that it is HEAVY -- this thing is over 2 pounds because of all of the copper involved, but it clears all of the motherboard features with no problems, and it DOES provide the best air cooling that I have EVER seen.

So technically you CAN use the XP-120, you should be able to use the XP-90 without any issues, and you can also go with the Hyper6 if you so desire. Let us know what you choose, and how it worked for you.

thanks for the post majorpayne, but i think i am going to go fot the zalman 7000b-cu. it is as quiet as i want, and the proformance still leaves room to OC. i just think that the coolermaster will be too noisey, i am trying to get rid of my small fans, they are too loud when i am trying to sleep (i like silence) i even cut up my case and put a 120mm fan in for the exaust, and my new psu, the antex neopower nas a 120mm fan. so these days i ama trying to go for more quiet over oc. on my last system i had my amd 1800+ from 1.53 to 2.1, but i didn't like putting up with the noise anymore. plus i can get the zalman i want on amazon for $36 with no shipping charge. we'll see how it goes. i think i am going to order it tonight. thanks
