Chances of random oem p3 being cb0 stepping?

If I purchased a 650 or 700 oem Pentium 3 right now, what are the chances that it will be the cb0 stepping? Have all/most of the older steppings been sold out? I'm trying to avoid paying the premium for an advertised cb0 and take my chances with the cheapest vendor and hope that it's a cb0.

Honestly, if I knew the answer to that I'd use my knowledge to win the lottery and retire.

I lucked out with a cb0 on my 1st shot. If you have a B&M retailer nearby, you might be able to buddy up with someone to get a glimpse of their in-stock inventory. Then with a list of SLY codes from Intel, pick out the cpu's you want.

It's possible however due to the CuMine shortage during Q1 and Q2 that the old steppings have been sold out for awhile. So you might find yourself 'stuck' with a cb0 CPU by default.

Just a guess, though....

onvia retail 700Es(discounts taken from pointclick and onvia coupons drop the price to a very good price point) that ship from Pittsburg are usually cB0..

the ones that ship from ontario(southern california) are not cB0.

i think if you buy it from a shop that got a big volume of processor selling you've a very good chance (>80%) to get a cb0.

but if you consider the recent shortage (last month?) of almost all coppermine processors there shouldn't be reason to find the older stepping cpus.
at least in my ridicoulos opinion.

(last week I bought my 700e from an hw distributor here in Roma, and yes, it was a cb0).

If you are on the west coast, you're chances are rough, as most of the WD's are loaded with cA2's. You may luck out, but I'm hearing the peeps are getting them on the east coast and alot of sobs over here on the west coast.

I believe that some people here have been able to request drop shipment from the PA warehouse to the west coast without any problems or additional charges. It'll just take a couple more days to get the CPU to you.

I live in RI o I guess my chances are good. But a quick newbiesh question. How do you know if a chip is cbo stepping physically? Are there marks or code number for it. I just don't wanna get hustled at a computer show. thanks.

Check out this page....it will tell you all the S-Specs for all P# processors, whether they are cA2 or cB0.

Compuwiz - Actually most either pronounce it "Wisster" or "Wissta". NH seacoast is better though, minutes to the ocean, hour to the mountains , and if one is so inclined, an hour to Boston.

I was just wondering how BAD the non cb0 steppings overclock to. All everybody ever talks about is how high they got their cb0 stepping up, but nobody ever mentioned how high they got their ca2 stepping to. I just wanted to compare the two and just see how many mhz difference we are talking about here. -Thanks

if you order from onvia, you can request shipment from either hte Pennsylvannia Distributor, or the Illinois Distributor..

My friend got a cA2 from Ontario, and it got to 860 or so, but its not as nice as a cb0 @ almost 1 ghz.

Onvia was really nice about it, so he returned it adn had one shipped in from Illinois.. He gets it next week sometime.

Onvia is supposed to be shipping mostly cbos right now, except out of one warehouse in CA, where almost all of the chips are reported to be the older stepping. I'm in Michigan, and I would have to be awfully unluckly to not get a shipment from EITHER PA or IL, as I am kind of in the middle of them, so I did not make a special shipping request. If you are in socal, I would definately make a special request.

If you must have a cbo (and we all must ), then my advice would be to either order there, or from another vendor that will specify cbo, OR, just go to a local computer show and read the numbers on the chips.

The link provided by the other poster will tell you the s-specs of all of the cbo and non-cbo PIIIs. With the exception of the chip that I just ordered from onvia, I always get them at computer shows. By physically reading the chips and looking for the right week and s-spec (gathered from information on intel's website and at www.overclockers.com in the cpu database), I have managed to buy an unlocked PII 233 that did 300 at default voltage, a C300A that did 450+ at default voltage, and a whole tray of "good" retail bulk C366s (all but one did 550+ at between 1.8 and 2.1V).
