I have an 06 Chevy aveo and I changed my timing belt back in august with a gates timing belt kit, to date I have probably driven 3500kms since I changed it. The car was not making this noise at all then right after installing the new timing belt, idler and tensioner it started. The sound is much quieter when cold, gets louder after a bit of driving and peaks at the level in the movie. When driving it kind of sounds like a supercharger, hard to hear when driving unless the windows are down and no music is playing. It is much louder when driving by a wall that the sound can bounce off of or stopped beside a curb. Last weekend I took the timing cover off to check if it was tensioned too tight and it was a bit over tensioned so I readjusted it and now the tension is fine. What would cause this sound since the tensioner and idler are brand new unless one is faulty from the factory. I also checked the belt to see if it was rubbing and it also seems fine. I am hoping that this is nothing serious, I don't really want to have to change the timing belt again but during Christmas I will be driving almost 5000kms so if I need to change it again I got to do it soon.

What kind of tensioning mechanism? If manually set, you probably have the belt too tight. If that's right, you really don't have many options other than a bearing in one of the pulleys.

Also that engine kind of sounds terrible. If I didn't know better, I'd say it was direct injected. Or a diesel.

What he said. Either a tensioner is failing or you have the belt on too tight.

Its a manual tensioner and you adjust the tension by rotating the water pump. On the tensioner there are two marks and you tension the belt till they line up on top of each other. Looks like this

I guess either the tensioner or idler pulley were bad from the factory and I should be looking into getting them both replaces since I don't know which one is bad.

as for the engine sounding bad I have no idea but for a cheap ass Korean car with 200,000kms the engine seems in pretty damn good running condition despite the odd sounds. Has always sounded like that since I bought it at 30,000kms on it except for the whining timing belt noise of course.

Thanks guys, time to go see how much a new tensioner and idler is going to cost me.

How hard is it to remove the covers and slip the belt off? With a noise that loud, I would bet you can feel a bad bearing by spinning the tensioner/idler by hand.

I would just tension the belt by feel. The general rule is tighten until you can grab the longest section of belt and twist it 90* with some effort. It obviously shouldn't be floppy, but not held so taut that you can't get a little play out of it.

I've over-tensioned belts by using marks like that. IMO it's probably just that the aftermarket parts are not identical. A belt that has 99.5% of the length of the factory one will fit just fine, but it would be too tight by the time those marks line up.

Daewoo powah!

Really, though, is that engine as loud as it sounds in the video, or is your camera mic just really sensitive and picking up some not-so-bad valve clatter?

Its impossible to loosen the belt without taking the harmonic balancer off because you need to loosen off the water pump to release tension. I can take the top cover and maybe trying to get in there with my stethoscope if there is room. I may throw the car up on a hoist when changing my oil and tension by feel, maybe the indicators on the tensioner are off.

I think the mic picked up everything because it was just so close to the valve cover and the upper timing belt cover was pulled back. There is some valve noise but I dont care enough to do anything about it.

Are you sure it's not off by a tooth? Might be a good idea to think about trading it in, that motor sounds like it's on it's last legs..

went and re-tensioned the belt using the 90 degree twist and the difference between where the tension marks should be normally and where they are now is huge. Before I let the tension go you could barely twist the belt 45 degrees. The whining sounds is almost completely gone, cant hear it at idle like in the video and you can barely hear it over the engine when revving it up. I am probably going to be paranoid now and just end up ordering a whole new kit and redoing the entire thing, I bed the tensioner bearing isn't in the best shape after all those kilometers.
