where do you see that? on the spec tab, i dont see that at all

It's because the HDMI ports are all 1.x and because it's a TV there is no DisplayPort.

There is no port on that TV with enough bandwidth to support 4k60. Even an HDMI 2.0 port is not a guarantee that it will be suitable for use as a PC monitor but the lack of one is an absolute guarantee that it won't be (unless you're OK with 30hz, which you shouldn't be).

The list of TVs that support 4k60 at full 4:4:4 color is very, very short. There's a thread over on HardForum that covers some:

Thanks. The Changhong is cheap ($330 on ebay, from Newegg), but looks like it's cheap for a reason. Only 1-year warranty also.

Still looking for the ultimate bargain for a 4K display, that's still decent quality. (Edit: Prefer to spend $400 or less.)

Really do want 4K@60, which the Changhong won't provide. But I think my 7950 card will only do 4K@60 over DP MST.

How bad is using a desktop / web browser / scrolling / mouse movement @ 30Hz? Really bad? Annoying?

I guess I might be able to create a custom res mode @ 30Hz and see if it runs on my 24" 1080P HDTV, and then I would be able to simulate the effects of a 30Hz desktop.

Make sure to also look for 4:4:4 color, that is extremely important for desktop use.

I use a LG 49UB8500 and aside from a couple minor firmware annoyances it works well.

At 2-4 times the price. If you've got the money to drop on it, yeah absolutely go for it. But I wouldn't call 4:2:0 unwatchable by any means.

For gaming and video sure 4:2:0 is probably going to be fine. If you are primarily using it for text and office type duties then your text quality will suffer.

I guess it's subjective, but if the option was a 4:2:0 4k TV vs a 2560x1440 monitor I'd take the monitor any day.

Hisense 50H7GB 4K TV

This article was triggered in part by the launch of the Hisense 50H7GB 50" 4K TV last week. In addition to 4Kp60 support with HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2, the TV also supports 1080p120 with real 120 Hz refresh rates and carries a "Netflix Recommended TV" designation. All of this comes for just $598 with Wal-Mart as the main distributor. Surprisingly, the TV also carries a 4-year in-home service warranty. Most of the technical details not available in the press release have been gathered by HDGuru. In addition, there is also a YouTube video review with the TV in action. The TV is powered by the MediaTek 5657 quad-core SoC.

Piqued by the price to specifications balance, we contacted Hisense and got some more information that is summarized in the table below. All the components (panel, TCON, BLU and enclosure) other than the open cell glass are manufactured by Hisense.

Hisense 50H7GB

4Kp60 HDMI 2.0 Supported Input Formats

4:2:2 8b, 10b
4:2:0 8b, 10b, 12b
HDMI 2.0a (HDR Metadata Support) Not Upgradable
Input Frame Rate Support Up to 120 fps @ 1080p
Display Refresh Rate Support Up to 480 Hz with High Ultra Smooth Motion
Panel Bit-Depth ? (8b likely)
Launch Price $600
Based on Hisense's response, it looks like the 50H7GB might not tick all the boxes for the perfect HTPC 4K display (given the lack of HDR capabilities). But, given the price, it is going to be hard to complain. On the other hand, support for 4Kp60 RGB 4:4:4 makes it an interesting display. At 50", it might be hard to justify calling it a monitor, but it seems to be a good candidate for connecting to computers in general (particularly for an 'entry-level' 4K HTPC setup).

Yeah, I'm going to have to see that TV in person. I've seen a lot of REALLY shitty backlighting on "too good to be true" TV's.

Let us know your opinion. I'm thinking about a low cost large 4K monitor. The present ones have too small fonts for me to see well. If I increase the font size, I lessen the amount that can be displayed.

It's probably going to be a low quality panel but at this price it's pretty tempting...

Some how I will sleep just fine at night knowing my TV knows I watch zero TV.

If you connect it to your LAN, to stream movies, it will scan everything that it has access to, and report it to the mother ship.

Samsung SMART TVs, have webcam with audio, and they disclose in their privacy policy that they outright spy on you.

Word is that Hisense syncs at 4k 60Hz but just throws out every other frame. Must be nice to make a product with made up specs...

4:4:4 isn't advertised or commonly listed in specifications right?

P.S. I have owned a TV with and without 4:4:4 and I must say that would never go back to a TV without 4:4:4 if planning to use with PC.

I have a 42" Changhong iin use as a general use monitor. I like it very much! It isn't for gaming but other than that, it is very surprising. I had never heard of Changhong but found out they are the #2 seller in China and have been making televisions for over 50 years. I got it at NE with Visa checkout for $249 with free shipping! It came in 2 days. I am amazed at the quality of construction. It is as good as any. Thin bezel, metal back, high quality base and trim. The remote is very good and responsive. As a TV, the tuner is sensitive and picks up as many OTA stations any of my other high $ sets do. The interface works great and has all the controls you could want. The picture quality on cable and OTA is very good. The panel has no dead pixels. It has 4 HDMI's and a full compliment of others. This is a good television. Even the sound from the built ins is pretty good. Streaming 4K video from YouTube is wonderful quality. It is not a Smart TV and as of right now, Netflix and Amazon require a Smart TV running their app to stream 4K. The next Roku and some others already announced will enable 4k Streaming. Is it the best TV you could get,,,,,, no. But it is good and is certainly the best for anywhere near the price. I have had 2 other cheap 4k sets and they were truly garbage in every way.

As a computer monitor, gaming ...... too much lag. Brightness, contrast, color quality remarkable. For regular desktop use and internet, I am more than pleased. My 30" HP has not been turned on for those tasks, not once. I have no ideal how long it will last but it runs cool and has not had a single glitch. I just ordered a second one for my wife's computer.

I was somewhat concerned about the size but after a couple of hours use I would never want a smaller size. I read a bunch of terrible reviews on NE and have to conclude that they were fake or from someone who lacked any understanding of how to set it up or tried to run with a low powered computer or a laptop. NE reviews have almost become worthless. I am using a GTX 980 and had not a single problem configuring it for 4k. Tried running with a GTX 680 with same results also. The color and contrast are splendid. Better than I have ever seen from a computer. The contrast ratio is excellent with amazing shadow detail. For $250 delivered this is the best buy I have ever made in computer goodies.
I had a 39" Seiki 4k and it was miserable in every way as a TV as a monitor and electronics. YMMV and everything is subjective but for me this thing is amazing especially considering the price.
