Changing CPU, do I have to reinstall Windows XP?

Hi,

Sorry if this is in the wrong section but I have a question regarding Windows XP. I have an OEM Windows XP at the moment on my PC. I am deciding to upgrade (only) its CPU to a more powerful one.

The question is, do I have to reinstall Windows XP after that or is it ok if its just the CPU being changed?

Also, if I change the mobo+CPU, would it be necessary then?

Edit: For more clarity I am using E6600 now which I am planning to swap for a Q6600.

1. Probably not. I have done that with XP Pro, and it adjusted just fine. Same with HDD changes and GUI changes.

2. Probably yes. The key swinger on that is the chipset on the mobo.

I guess it depends on the chipsets involved. I've changed both mobos and CPUs at the same time on several builds and still run the same copy of XP without making any changes to it. Perhaps if you use the same make mobo you'll have a better chance of success, not sure... I've always used ASUS mobos.

In any case, if you have any trouble after you install your current XP on the new build, just try a repair install rather than a clean install. That should clean up any derelict files, etc., and you'll keep all your programs and settings
