DECISION MADE - I'M NOT TAKING THE JOB thanks to some good info from Platypus
/THREAD
Need some opinions on this.
I'm in my mid 20s
Current company - Network Engineer - 53K plus 3K bonus - been here a little over a year
PROS
a very large company
great job security
very very relaxed work environment (hence ATOT, email).. rude jokes, lots of breaks
workaholic boss, who I do learn a lot from
work with principle engineers on network design
mentor is available (at least for now)
20 min drive to work
CONS
not to sound racist but I work with a lot of people outside of my race which creates akwardness sometimes
workaholic boss... yes, negative too
rare night work
don't feel like i'm going anywhere within the company unless if I go out of state
some co-workers seem to lack intelligence within the company...
New company - Finance Industry - Windows Sys Admin w/ Tech Support
PROS
college coworker referred me; lots of college alumni in the area
very high tuition reimbursement
corporate headquarters
after i'm at the position for a year I can move to MANY other IT positions
more people my age, workout center, better cafeteria, events.. more social networking...
flexible work hours, as long as I get my 8 hours in
pay should be about the same, maybe more -- not sure on this.
CONS
I'd work in a lab basically doing tech support for production testing of applications on servers
45-60 min drive
i would be inferior to a lot of college friends who interned at this company and have moved up
if I did relocate it'd be further away from my girlfriend when I did move away from my current location
The job is a complete catch 22. The job wouldn't be as technical as my current one, and something tells me it won't be as relaxed of a work environment on doing whatever I want.
So at this point I think I may go in for the interview just to check out their campus but I'm going to be really hesitant to take the job. With the flexible hours I could leave around 6 in the morning and avoid rush hour.
I guess it boils down to... taking a job that you might not like for your future. But tech support? blah.
