DECISION MADE - I'M NOT TAKING THE JOB thanks to some good info from Platypus
/THREAD

Need some opinions on this.

I'm in my mid 20s

Current company - Network Engineer - 53K plus 3K bonus - been here a little over a year

PROS
a very large company
great job security
very very relaxed work environment (hence ATOT, email).. rude jokes, lots of breaks
workaholic boss, who I do learn a lot from
work with principle engineers on network design
mentor is available (at least for now)
20 min drive to work

CONS
not to sound racist but I work with a lot of people outside of my race which creates akwardness sometimes
workaholic boss... yes, negative too
rare night work
don't feel like i'm going anywhere within the company unless if I go out of state
some co-workers seem to lack intelligence within the company...

New company - Finance Industry - Windows Sys Admin w/ Tech Support

PROS
college coworker referred me; lots of college alumni in the area
very high tuition reimbursement
corporate headquarters
after i'm at the position for a year I can move to MANY other IT positions
more people my age, workout center, better cafeteria, events.. more social networking...
flexible work hours, as long as I get my 8 hours in
pay should be about the same, maybe more -- not sure on this.

CONS
I'd work in a lab basically doing tech support for production testing of applications on servers
45-60 min drive
i would be inferior to a lot of college friends who interned at this company and have moved up
if I did relocate it'd be further away from my girlfriend when I did move away from my current location

The job is a complete catch 22. The job wouldn't be as technical as my current one, and something tells me it won't be as relaxed of a work environment on doing whatever I want.

So at this point I think I may go in for the interview just to check out their campus but I'm going to be really hesitant to take the job. With the flexible hours I could leave around 6 in the morning and avoid rush hour.

I guess it boils down to... taking a job that you might not like for your future. But tech support? blah.

Unknown, I may ask them via email before going in for the interview what the range is they would be willing to offer, but so far I've only interviewed over the phone with corporate HR, not the manager. I left it open ended when I talked to him on the phone saying it would depend on the job. That's what I said to "what would it take to make you work for us".

In the western suburbs basically. I like to keep things confidential in case someone from either company may be browsing.

I would take the drive from job #1 please....

I don't mean to be blunt but it sounds like you need to GROW UP a little....job # 1 seems absolutely fine and the CONs you listed....they are not.

job # 2 sounds like a mindless zombie job...at least with job 1, you get to travel a little.

I would stick with Job # 1

the 60 minute drive alone would be a deal breaker for me...

Honestly, Job #1 sounds pretty good if those are the only problems you can find with it. Also keep in mind that the grass always looks greener on the other side, recruiters will say anything just to get you to sign, and you'll probably find lots of things to hate about job #2 after being there for a few months.

That said, I'd go with Job #2 if it paid a lot better.

Indeed. Having a 20 minute drive to work at job 1 sounds awesome.

Suburbs is enough info, reason I asked is because I did a commute like the one in job two for a few months and wanted to kill myself. I basically lived on the north side of downtown and commuted up to the NW burbs; never again for any amount of money. I work in the loop now and use the cta. Door to door 30 min including walking. (my 0.02).

I advise not working IT for financial companies. I have in the past (fortune 500 financial companies) and they all have the same problems. They are cheap as all fucking get out. The last company I worked for (sub fortune 100 company) decided to CANCEL the 3% yearly raise and give NO cost of living raise, as well as cancel all company paid for cell phones and home internet. It's fucked up, and it's not the first financial company I have been with to do it.

The best companies to work for IMO are manufacturing and/or power. They always have great yearly bonuses and always give a yearly raise + cost of living increase.

Financial companies blow, greediest fuckers on the planet.

CTA and walking are fine during spring/summer/fall. Winter though, fuck that...

I work for F&I and no problems here.....your one bad experience with that one company does not equate to the same for all others. I get everything you listed and more...

I do agree that they are stingy, but that's mostly in the budgeting process for more assets. They don't cheap out for me when it comes to salary...don't no body want to mess with salary....companies should know better.

Plus, getting a job downtown will pay more. Recruiters are telling me that senior dev jobs get arround 100K in Chicago while jobs in the subs are arround 70K.

If you read my post you would see I have worked for multiple Fortune 500 Financial companies.
