Ok so Im in a bind. This morning I try to start my car and I hear a high pitched screech and then nothing. After fiddling around with it I did get it to start, and it ran fine. While the engine is idling I can hear the starter trying to start while the engine is running. Then I tried it again an hour ago and it wont start at all.

So I'm pretty sure that I need a new starter put in, and I can get one at Auto Zone for $140.

So I'm wondering how difficult this task is. Is it something that a guy with some good tools and decent knowledge can fix or is this a job for a mechanic?

BTW, I'm trading this car in, in a few months so I'm not too concerned with the quality of the component, and I'm trying to fix this as cheap as possible.

Normally it's 2 (or sometimes 3) bolts, plus perhaps a nut or two holding the wires in. other than that as long as it's not frozen to the transmission housing you are golden.

ok. And Am I correct in presuming that its next to the flywheel. From what I can see, it appears that it can be accessed by removing the front passenger wheel.

Yes, the teeth of the starter mesh with the flywheel. When you engage the starter it pushes out a piston with the small gear on it that meshes and then it kicks the electric motor to crank the whole assembly.

You don't need to take off the wheel.
Disconnect batttery negative cable--There are 3 10mm bolts holding on an inspection cover at the starter-once removed I believe 2 15mm hold the starter in place.
Then like a 13mm holding the starter cable an and 11/32 or some such holding the solenoid wire.
