I really like the smell of used and burnt 90 weight.

Does anyone else, or am I just messed up in the head?

85w-90 is the appropriate weight for manual transmissions.
And it is the nastiest, foulest sh!t inside a car.

I concur about the differential fluid. God knows how or why it ends up stinking SO badly!

It can be nasty, expecialy to paint. The dealer got some on my tailgate on my dodge, and the paint peeled right off in a big hand print shape. I did get a new tailgate out of it though

The reason I asked is that last MT oil change I did called for of all things ATF fluid. It was a Ranger with a Mazda tranny...

I used to use 140W in my Lotus. Stuff was like pudding. You had to heat it up a bit to even get it to flow at all. Let me give you a hint: Never heat it in the microwave for an extended period of time. It gets HOT fast and will melt the container and catch on fire.

....like it's about 6 cylinders short?

Seriously, rear-end juice is the cheesiest smelling....esp on asphalt in the sun

Me and my buddy affectionately call it 'butt sauce'

How can you like the smell of that crap? It's absolutly horrid, especially when it comes out with water mixed in (friends' 88 firebird). That just makes it worse. ATF is close, but chassis grease is the worse. That stuff makes me sick when it's hot out. I don't particularly like the taste of chassis grease either..................

Although I am pretty surprised that your manual trans takes 90 weight. My 87 Accord took 15w-40, and my friend's Mustang uses ATF (in the manual trans).

Oh God, 90 smells like ass.

I'm all about the smell of gasoline, 10w-40, two-cycle, etc., but 90 = butt.

I don't like it.

BTW, manual transmissions, depending on what the manufacturer decides, can use heavy gear oil (80-90 weight), regular engine oil (like 5W-30), or ATF (automatic transmission fluid is just a light oil with lots of detergents and a red dye).

PS, maybe you should get a job at a dealership as a lube tech.

HAHAAHAHHAHAH!!!

That's some good advice.

Next time, use Red Line synthetic gear oil of appropriate weight. If it's that thick at room temp, how thick do you think it is at 32F? Red Line and Amsoil syntetics do not smell as bad as conventional gear oils.

I was told that the sulphur in gear oil makes it stink. Makes me want to wretch!!

You're absolutely right James. I now use synthetics for everything except regular engine oil. What a difference in the feel of shifting and such.

You are one sick puppy. Gear oil is simply nasty.

Thank you Honda for putting 5w-30 into your manual trannys.
