Any thoughts on Charleston, SC?

edit:
I'm toying with the idea of moving there. Kinda bored with Charlotte, and Charleston seems to have so much character. I wanted to see what people thought of that city--from vague impressions ("Rednecks" etc) to informed opinions.

edit2:
Thanks for the responses.

I've been to Charleston several times for business, but on such short trips, it's hard to get a feel for what it's like to live there. My take on Charleston so far:

Pros:
Warm weather
Reasonable home prices
Close to beaches
Historic city with 'character'

Cons:
Crime
Hurricanes

Unknown issues:
Economy?
Urban decay?

My job allows me to live pretty much in any small to large cities, so economy is not that critical except that it affects the overall tone of the city.

Unfortunately, I now live in Charlotte. Unfortunate because real estate here is below average in terms of appreciation. According to the Feds, Charlotte real estate prices have gone up only about 20% in the past 5 years! The house I bought in 2003 has gone up, at most, $20K only. If we move to Charleston metro area, I would guess that we would have to spend more for a similar house/neighborhood.

If anyone wants to live in a cheap, but boring city, come to Charlotte! (And buy my house )

Columbia, SC isn't bad. The weather is good, the people are nice. I've heard lots of good things about Charleston from people around Columbia. Why are you headed there?

I've been to Charleston once. It's a fairly historic town. Also, let's not forget Rainbow Row.

I lived there for 20 years, it's nice.

I still keep a home in Goose Creek, and it looks like I might be moving back at the beginning of March.

If your looking at a particular company there let me know and I will be happy to answer any questions.

I spent quite a bit of time there when an exgf moved there. She actually lived on folly beach.

It's the south, the deep south. No matter how many notherners go there it will never change.

My uncle lives there. It's nice, but the people there talk with a southern twang though. Kinda annoying.

I think its more of a historic/coastal situation. Not a bunch of country bumpkins, or whatever you think it is.

Ah well, I've been down there, as well as the Myrtle Beach area...

They're not bad people, but how can I say this politely.. they're a bit 'backwards'.

Is Goose Creek rural? I've been told that Summerville and West Ashley are nice and affordable. What areas to avoid?

Goose Creek, Summerville, West Ashley, Mt. Pleasant, James Island, North Charleston, none are rural.

Rural would be Monks Corner, which is actually about 15mins outside Goose Creek. But you can get a nice new house with an acre or so for $170k.

Each has there own gated golf communities.

Ball park me what your looking to spend on a house and I can point you in the right direction.

I dunno. Are there a lot of you there?

Nah about zero big man

Mostly its a mix of North and South. Theres a lot of nice places to live. If you're more 'redneckish' and right leaning Frederick might be better for you.

Although its colder here than the Carolinas though, I don't know if you guys get snow down there too much?

every 7 years or so ^^ , usually melted by noon.

Ah well its much colder here... Sometimes we get big storms like New York, around 10 inches +.

But this year its been incredibly mild, only one small storm, 5 inches of snow. Right now its in the 60's in the daytime for some odd reason
