Been to Charleston more than three times........gorgeous town. Nice people, no matter the color of one's skin, despite claims to the contrary.

You ought to go during the Spoleto Festival..........fine arts festival. Great times to be had then.

Charleston is an excellent place to choose to live.......and your tax base will be extremely low.......South Carolina ranks in the bottom 6 in overall taxes in the U.S.

As far as the "Watch for the cops" statement........don't speed and don't blast your music in the historic district. They ARE quite strict in maintaining some semblence of "quiet" there. The boom-box-car boys do seem to have a problem as they do not seem to understand that "sharing" their choice of music over a 3 block area is not appreciated.

I think its more of a historic/coastal situation. Not a bunch of country bumpkins, or whatever you think it is.

Ah well, I've been down there, as well as the Myrtle Beach area...

They're not bad people, but how can I say this politely.. they're a bit 'backwards'.

If you are comparing the two cities, you are impossibly unobservant.
Charleston is almost the complete opposite city from Mertyl Beach in all regards.

They are similar in that a substantial portion of the population of both places has recently moved there from the North East.

However, the Northerners who have moved to Charleston tend to be well educated, cultured, and refined. Those who have moved to Metryl Beach live in campers, play Golf, go to cheesy Vegas Styled Shows, and like to frequent all you can eat fried sea food places.

Don't confuse Goose Creek with Charleston -
you are talking about a town with average real estate Prices of $100,000 and one with an average price of $1,000,000.

1,000,000 for downtown Charleston perhaps.

But the city of Charleston covers many areas including West Ashley and James Island. Both places you can get a very nice house for under $200k.

NOTE: Goose Creek ain't cheap. Money wise it costs more to live in than Austin Texas. Over the past 5 years or so it has been invaded by "golf communities" and has forced prices up.

I know since the house I own has doubled in value in 7 years, with the last 5 being the most dramatic increases. I'm not complaining

Thanks for the responses.

I've been to Charleston several times for business, but on such short trips, it's hard to get a feel for what it's like to live there. My take on Charleston so far:

Pros:
Warm weather
Reasonable home prices
Close to beaches
Historic city with 'character'

Cons:
Crime
Hurricanes

Unknown issues:
Economy?
Urban decay?

My job allows me to live pretty much in any small to large cities, so economy is not that critical except that it affects the overall tone of the city.

Unfortunately, I now live in Charlotte. Unfortunate because real estate here is below average in terms of appreciation. According to the Feds, Charlotte real estate prices have gone up only about 20% in the past 5 years! The house I bought in 2003 has gone up, at most, $20K only. If we move to Charleston metro area, I would guess that we would have to spend more for a similar house/neighborhood.

If anyone wants to live in a cheap, but boring city, come to Charlotte! (And buy my house )

I can't really add much to what has already been said but I was born & raised in Mt. Pleasant. I would love to move back to the Charleston area and get away from Houston. We also had a beach front condo on Isle of Palms.

Yep. A guy here got HIV from one of those college hotties.

I'm stationed in Goose Creek, haven't been off base much, but I do know for a fact that the drivers here are HORRIBLE. Most traffic deaths per mile of highway of any state I believe.

I live in Charleston

Crime is not an issue for the most part unless you decide to live in North Charleston.

Honestly the worst part about Charleston is that traffic absolutely sucks for the amount of people that live down here.
