This guy is awesome. He's used his influence to get rent controlled rates for himself and of course being as corrupt as Tammany Hall, NY decided to put him back right in office.

This guy should be headed out the door of Congress and probably to prison, but the Magic 8 Ball tells me that at best a slap on the wrist is his fate.

Embattled Harlem Rep. Charles Rangel startled the House subcommittee weighing ethics charges against him Monday by announcing that he was "excusing myself from these proceedings" - and walking out.
"I respectfully remove myself from these hearings," the 80-year-old Rangel said with a dramatic flourish before departing.
Despite having had months to prepare for the hearing, Rangel showed up without a lawyer and claimed he was too broke to hire one.

Probably explains his apathetic attitude towards this - he knows he's years away from having to face the music. Just another dirtbag politician who thinks he's above the law. The man deserves his day in court, but if he is found guilty I can only hope he's made an example of before he dies.

Looks like the presentation of evidence is over and the committee accepted all of what was presented. All that's left is for them to render a verdict.

Ethics trial ends, Rangel awaits fate

After his dramatic walkout from a high stake ethics trial, Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) now awaits judgment from the ethics panel that has heard the evidence against him and has ended the public portion of the trial.

The ethics panel, after an unexpected 40-minute private session Monday, rejected Rangel’s request to delay the trial and forged ahead with its business, plowing through piles of evidence about Rangel’s corruption case. The witness chair where Rangel was supposed to sit was empty, a sobering sign of Rangel’s refusal to participate.

Now, the special panel hearing the case decided to accept a motion stating all the evidence presented by ethics committee lawyers on Rangel’s guilt was fact. The panel then retired to deliberate in secret over Rangel’s fate.

It was a fitting end for a wild day, and the only question now is whether Rangel will be found guilty or innocent. Judging upon the way things have gone so far, the chances of Rangel being cleared appear very low...

I will not be surprised if Rangel knows of some obscure House rule that would prevent the Committee from finding him guilty if he did not participate in his own defense, or sit in the special chair, or some other inconsequential thing.
