Basically, open this account with the minimum required, make several direct deposits, and in the mail you receive a $100 mastercard gift card.

I used my paypal deposits as the required deposit(s).

The site doesn't mention how many deposits have to be made.

I opened the account 3 or 4 weeks ago, made 5 or 6 deposits paypal deposits (from ebay sales), and received the card today!

Note, they may have a fee for accounts closed within 120 days of opening, but still, even if you let the account sit for 4 months, thats a hell of an interest (with alot less BS involved then citibank checking).

Another note, charter one serves the following states CT, IL, IN, MA, MI, NY, OH, PA, VT.

What they sent looks like a regular debit/credit card with the MC logo. Upon calling to activate it, i was told there is no pin, and just use it as a credit card at POS.

Because usually dd is meant for payroll.

I guess so. Those are the only deposits i've made to the account since the time the account was opened. Wasn't really expecting the $100, but it came no questions asked. The bank lists it as

MM/DD/YYYY TRANSFER PAYPAL0xxxxxxxxxxxxxx $ WW.ZZ

(where xxx is some really long number).

So I guess so long as its an electronic transfer (wire?) of some sort, its qualifies.

Probably, or at least have a mailing address in that state. You really should call them up and ask, and/or read the terms on the site. I live in one of those states, so this question never crossed my mind

As always, ymmv, but to put $100-200 in suspension for 4 months to make $100 is a pretty nice return.

I've been with this bank (actually, charterone bought out the bank i was with before) for the last 5 years or more. Really good bank to deal with, free electronic bill payment. Good interest rates, CSR's fairly professional, etc.

I opened this acct because i got sick of dealing with xfers from paypal to TCF to charterone.

Princeman -- Netbank.com has very low or no fees and doesnt require direct deposit. Also Ascencia.com. Look around ... Netbank gives ya $50 for signing up I think. Ya get interest and free online bill pay too.

I think you can get this account w/o direct deposit. I think you only have to do DD or Paypal or something in order to get the free $100. This account actually looks tempting even w/o the free $100...low balance, no monthly fees, free checks, debit/check card.

I wanted to get in on this, I was reading the Account Rules and Regulations, and here is something they had that was not mentioned here:

"If there is no customer activity (deposits or check writing) for two consecutive months on any The Best Free Checking Account, the account will be reclassified as an Unlimited Checking with Interest Account and subject to all fees applicable to an Unlimited Checking with Interest Account."

The Unlimited Checking with Interest Account comes with a $6 monthly fee.

i was rejected for having home address not match credit card (gave them my college address so i could receive the invitation packet)

Can someone tell me how the One Switch (https://www.charterone.com/oneswitch/default.asp) works?

Do they generate a form letter and have me send it to my other bank and credit cards with the old bank associated? Do I actually have to close out my old bank account?

It says on the bottom of the page that it's up to me to mail out the letters. How do they know that I've actually done it and the switch was completed?
