"Chatters" when opening page or link

m m m my computer cha cha cha chatters when I open a page or hit a link. This is the internet sounds that come with IE6, the click you hear when you go to a page or link. The problem is that every now and then it will chatter real fast like a M134 mini gun on a Cobra and other times it will cycle several times rather slow .. at about an M60 machine gun rate. Most of the time it doesn't do it at all.

System is:
XP pro
SP2
all updates
fast cable connection
Prescott 2.8 at stock speed
1Gb dual channel
Chaintech AV-710 sound
MS mouse and keyboard

It doesn't seem to effect anything ....

What soundcard are you using?

Sorry 'bout that ... a Chaintech AV-710 but I think this is in the IE software side rather than the sound card side. The sound function performs flawlessly whether I'm listening music or talking on IM and the sound, that "click" you hear when opening a page or link also works perfectly .. just at times it chatters.

each and every click you hear is ie making a connection to ?????
i would strongly suspect a worm or trojan is loose in your system.
if you have sp2 and good av going then windows is broken.
check to see what processes are running in task manager it may be there.

You might want to try moving the sound card to a different PCI slot. Sometimes motherboards designate certain PCI slots as "shared slots," i.e. they share hardware resources with one another. Sound cards don't always play well in this configuration. By moving the sound card to a different slot, you might get better performance.

That's a good thought there, Oldman. I wondered that myself but only one window or link is opened. I have Norton 2004 AV and run the windows firewall as it seems to be less intrusive than the Nortons firewall. I did a full scan just yesterday and nothing, but I will check my web history the next time it happens and see if it's going places other then where I'm going.

MrChad, the only PCI card I have is the sound card and it's in the botton slot (#6) on an Abit !C-7 G MaxII. I'll try and reference shared slots on this MB to confirm that none are shared with the AGP slot... (my only other card .. a 128Mb FX5200).
