This has a lot to do with bomb threats from jack o lanterns recently coming from the pro-american former elite ruling class parts of towns, (whites)

Shame on the BBC for dumping this american biased crap on their site, but it figures.

I find myself agreeing with BarneyFife. Scary. Genuinely, though, Halloween has no meaning. It could have, but does not. It is a ritual without purpose.

And Valentines Day? Mothers Day? Fathers Day? Christmas?

EVERy holiday is "without purpose" to someone. Should we just cancel them all? Is it *really* that big of a deal if people celebrate it? Does it affect you if they celebrate it or not?

Condor, DÍa de los Muertos is nothing like halloween, it is a day of family that have past on.

We "worship" scary things and tease one another for candy...and of course scare people.

Do we go trick or treating with our dead relatives? No, your the one that is misinformed about anothers culture.

Just becasue they have skeletons hanging on those days it's not a scary spooky thing...it's a respect for the dead.

I lived in Mexico City for four years and in La Paz for another two. If you have no experience, you can learn a lot by reading.

regardless the american way of celebrating it is very different, it is looked at as a night of ghosts and scary things where in latino cultures it is a day(s) of respect for the dead.

Travel there for one of the holidays and then report back. You would enjoy it. I did.

Oh, it is also a big commercial deal for Latin America too.

Read the part where it states that they celebrate their dead. They really do. On top of that they double dip and have tied the trick or treating into it as well.

Then you celebrated with americans, I dunno Condor but I am not going to argue about a simple holiday, they are totally different, the us is not a catholic country nor does it celebrate the day like catholic but in a more anglo-saxon protestant way of making it a scary thing....

Aren't you a christian? why do I have to explain such a simple thing?

You gonna ship his dunce cap too? Steep, it is a little hard to ignore several million Mexicans in the street celebrating the holiday. Add to that the domestic help we had in the house and my Mexican staff that were very generous in their explanation of anything local. The shame is that Chavez has apparently forgotten that the roots of the holiday are from his civilization. Vendors sell skeletions, bats, cakes, special foods and all sorts of other things on the streets for the day.

Oh yeah, BBC got it wrong too.

I am sure there is another side to this though Chavez is usually on track, smells like more anti-chavez spin from AP.

And what difference would it to my liking my country if I hold contempt for our corrupt media?

No, I don't think of america as something to be worshipped, its a arbitrary line.

Nationalism is for the weak.

I respect all my neighbors of planet earth not just the ones behind a imaginary line.

While I agree with the idea of respecting all peoples of any nationality, you're only able to say what you do because of the United States and the benefits, protections and historical accomplishments of it, so you ought to show some appreciation.

Or, if things really are all equal and America is "just an arbitrary line," and there is no place for respect and appreciation for what your country offers, go walk around in a couple nations in Africa or the middle east and I bet, if you survived, you'd be scooting your ass back here real quick.
