Aren't the ergonomics of that thing pretty meh since there's no handguard?

It's billed as a survival rifle so ergonomics weren't really a priority. When I held it the lack of a handguard seemed trivial, resting my other hand around the magwell was just fine. If anything, the storage buttstock is pretty wide. If one weren't breaking it down, a collapsible/standard stock wouldn't be a bad idea. I think that sort of frame is more appropriate for a .22LR rifle. I like my 10/22 carbine but it feels oversized for the round.

I just can't justify $250 for a 10/22, it's just a simple rifle.

if i'm going to "waste" $250, I may as well get the Mossberg AR knockoff.

True, but you'll more than make up the cost in rounds fired since rimfire ammo is 1/10 the cost of centerfire.

A good vid review on Tactical 22's:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3wKO438N6c

He said the Sig 522 jammed the least (most reliable). Not sure how much that costs though, but it looks like a sweet gun for tactical training or short range (<100 yds) situations like home defense.
EDIT: MSRP is $515

you should be able to get a 10/22 for around $200.

I got mine for about 170 or 180 on sale.

Also, hi-cap .22 mags suck for the most part. There's just something about the rounds that cause problems. A good one for 10/22, but super expensive, is made by tactical innovations. They do have a composite version that is cheaper than the all metal one. steel feed lips are generally the ticket to making the mags work better.

Another possibility is the Henry AR-7, runs around the same price as the Mossberg and is quite portable, can breakdown and fit inside the stock. I almost went with this for my first rifle.

I've seen that before, not a fan of it. Seems to be a nice gun but looks like a 007 knockoff wannabe or something.

Umm, the Marlin 795 is rimfire unless I'm missing something.

10/22

It's incredibly popular for a reason, and you can find tons of accessories for it. Lots of stock options and such.

My experience has been it's just best to stick with factory BX-25 mags for the 10/22. Surprisingly durable for a polymer magazine, goes for $20-30 depending on where you shop. As long as you don't overload the mag (it can fit 26), it should feed just fine. Even some steel-lipped 3rd party mags seem to have feed issues.

Probably because it was used in a Bond movie once , though theirs was somehow a .25 caliber.

I have a Marlin 60. Same action as the 795 just with a tube feed magazine. Fun gun.

i bought a modified 10/22 by magnum research @ bud's gun shop. sweet trigger, bull barrel, and very accurate with cheap cci blazer bulk ammo. I have a 25 round magazine for it too.

the day i zero'd it @ 25 yards:

I was putting groups like that together at 50 yards with my 10/22 a couple weeks ago.

That rifle my friend is shooting in the background is a $1000 Anschutz 22. It is very accurate. Nice gun but a lot of money for a .22 IMO.

those are competition guns, not plinking guns.

any time you get something set up for competition (accuracy), it's going to cost more.

I got mine for my 12th birthday, 16 years ago. Used.

It's still working great. What's $125 over 10, 20, 30 years?

You should be able to get a new 10/22 for ~$200, and if you aren't opposed to used cheaper is definitely possible. My first .22 was a Marlin Model 60 that was a jamomatic no matter what I did with it, and I have beat the crap out of my $75 pawn shop 10/22 and it just works.

I'm gonna check out the Marlin tomorrow and see how I feel about it, I'll go from there.

For me personally, the aesthetic appearance of a rifle is of great importance. The one shortylickens gave is by far the best looking one so far. The clip sticking out of the 795, to my eye is just plain ugly. The top one in a 22 seems phony.

Another 10/22 owner, have had it about 8 years but have owned another one in the past. I have thousands of rounds through it, never an issue. Extremely fun to shoot and is quite accurate. I paid $250 for it at the time the way it sits, minus the scope and extended mag.

My old man had an Anschutz .22LR 10+ years ago, but it was a bolt-action pistol. D: It actually was about the size of that 10/22 Charger that someone else posted, with the built-in bipod etc. It was ridiculously accurate.

Oddly enough, the old man picked up one of those Chargers this winter, but I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet (or has he for that matter.)

If you want an AR based 22 get the Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22. It's a great rifle for plinking. They are very reliable and accurate for what they are. It's on my shortlist of guns to get. Shooting 223 gets expensive fast.

.223 is probably one of the cheapest centerfire rounds to fire unless you go surplus calibers.

You can get 500 rounds for $104 (Wolf at Aim Surplus) + shipping.

I have a .22 conversion kit for my AR-15. It is not a different upper, the US military used these for training and it is a drop in replacement for the bolt carrier. Same barrel / upper. Its a great money saver for plinking.
