Primary Arms and now AIM Surplus have a couple of NICE deals if you want to build your own rifle...

Spike's Tactical Stripped lower for $89
https://www.primaryarms.com/Spike-s-Tactical-Lower-Multi-Forged-Spider-Bul-p/stls019.htm
or...
Spike's Tactical "Zombie" Stripped lower for $89.95-DELIVERED :awe:
http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.a...ail&utm_term=0_6870497a6a-ef183ad479-18886753

DS Arms's rifle kit with everything to finish it for $479
https://www.primaryarms.com/DS-Arms16-Rifle-Kit-p/dsa16riflekit.htm

Slightly more than a couple deals in the past but still pretty darn good, especially with a chrome lined barrel and Spike's lower:awe:

This thread has turned into a discussion on "how to" build an AR15 so has been moved to OT...
Hot deals is for linking good deals as the title says...

Wow, great final price for a complete AR. Bonus for getting to put it together; more fun than buying a complete one, in my opinion.

Once it's built, only problems, at least for me, are the cost and availability of .223/5.56 ammo and really having no place to shoot one without forking over a lot of $ for range memberships.

Ammo availability is actually pretty good right now, my local Wally World's have tons and there's a lot of online retailers that have it in stock right now too, even the cheap steel stuff that I usually shoot but also brass pretty much everywhere, check out ammo supply warehouse or AIM surplus, not as cheap as it used to be but not terrible and has been in stock reliably for quite a while now...as for a range I'm a member of my local gun club, $100 a year for unlimited use
No front or rear sites. Just the front base is included.
Actually it's an A2 front sight and not just the base, so an MBUS would be all that's needed or whatever optics you want, Primary Arms has some nice and reasonably priced red dots

Thanks for the correction.

I'd love to jump on this as I have been researching this pretty heavily over the last few weeks. I keep seeing all the overwhelming number of options out there and end up pricing one out well over a grand. I'd like to build my upper though too. But regardless, the timing is not right for me. It will have to wait until spring.

Based on the research I've done this combo comes out to a really great price. But as anyone that has researched doing this knows, you'd better act real fast.

how does this compare to other AR's?
For your basic AR it's pretty good, there's no real fancy upgrades with it or anything except for the chrome lined barrel which is a step up from a melonite finish, though the Spike's lower is one of the better ones out there in general. For the price you can't go wrong and you can always do upgrades on anything you want later

Can you please be more specific exactly what tools are needed? i jumped on this, so I want to have the correct tools ready when it arrives. Appreciate it.

I completed mine with a hammer and a pair of vise grips, some pin punches are also good to have but you can watch THIS video to see what you are in for, it's pretty detailed on what you have to do

I built 3 lowers with those tools... and you are correct, correct pin punches help... especially with that pesky front takedown pin spring.

Phohenadel, it helps to have an 'AR multitool' to properly secure the castlenut on most collapsible type stocks, but other than that, just common tools found in any reasonable toolbox. Patience and the ability to follow directions really helps, too.

I saw DPMS ARs, brand new in the box, for $639 at my local gun show.

Corwin & Charlie, thanks for the info. I purchased that tool as well as some punches. Can't wait to start it, kinda like a big boys Lego set, but with bullets.

Here there are only one or two ranges in the area that offer a rifle range and it's a minimum $275 / year for the privilege of using the nice, but tiny, 25yd rifle range. One does offer a rifle league that allows you to run a course with rifle and pistol for $15 (no range membership required) for 2 to 3 runs, time depending, but when I went and watched once, it's basically guys living out their live-action COD dreams.

Nothing particularly wrong with that, just kind of humorous.

The Wolf Gold ammo on Aim Surplus seems right about the price I'm accustomed to; hadn't looked in a good long while. What's really hard to come by at a good price these days is 9mm rounds.

Excellent, it is a lot of fun to build, this isn't the first AR deal thread I've started here and it always brings a smile to my face knowing I've helped bring a new rifle into the world:awe:

That kind of stinks, my gun club has up to 300 yd distances for shooting, maybe you should move to Texas As for 9mm Ammo Supply Warehouse has some Aguila at $300/1000 which isn't terrible, or $30.50 a box, but my local Wally World has had their WWB in stock regularly for quite a while now at $26/100, maybe yours has some too...never hurts to check and you can always do it online too, there a trick you can use to see even if their page shows store information not available
Anyone have a recommendation on a scope?
What kind of scope? ACOG, red dot, etc...what kind of distance are you wanting to shoot at?

Red dot and a scope out to maybe 200 yards for the range.
Should have also asked price too

Primary Arms has some very reasonably priced red dots in a variety of styles and you can get an add-on 3x magnifier to use them out to longer ranges, 3x would probably be enough to get you out to 200yds...almost forgot they also have a 6x...

That would suck, where are you? Here in TX I pay a $15-25 transfer fee, show my CHL and walk out the door with my prize.
