I was thinking about ordering one to see details mpg stats, has anyone here tried one? Are there any specific things to lookout for when buying one?

I've got one that works pretty well with the torque app, I'd read the reviews on the specific model you buy, some are junk even if they look identical.

Same here, IIRC I paid $17 for it. I don't think there are a lot of differences in that price-bracket, just look at the sellers feedback (if Ebay) or reviews (if Amazon).

This one seems to work the best. A little pricier (has been cheaper on Amazon before), but just works (I use two with Torque)

That must be a good one, I see a lot of cheap ones on eBay that are called 327

I ended up ordering the BAFX scanner, it is due to be delivered today and have bought the paid Torque app.

About two years bought two of the cheapest ones ($8) I could find (one from ebay and one from Amazon) and both are still working fine.

What are you talking about, who said they cant plug in a wire? If you are talking about a wired odb2 reader, why would I want that when I can get one that is bluetooth for cheap and it sync up with an app on my phone or tablet?

Apps.......bluetooths.......you do realize they rent the scanners free at Autozone right?

What is your point? I dont want to go to Autozone everytime I want to check mpgs or other things, not real sure why you seem to care anyway. I couldnt care less if anyone else prefers to go to Autonze to use their scanner, it is none of my buisiness

This gif fits nicely

Ignore the village idiot / troll. It's obvious to anyone with a brain that a 15 dollar Bluetooth scanner that will sync with your phone and output much more data than an autozone scanner could hope to is a much better and more efficient solution than wasting time and gas to drive to autozone and bum their scanner every time you want to check something on your car's computer

That GIF is thee most epic, most perfect, most well used GIF ever. Well played, well bowled!

I bought one to put into the Gen4 MR2 build. It works pretty good so far. The only codes I'm getting now are for the ECU trying to find an automatic transmission.

I'm trying to find a small cheap tablet that has Bluetooth so that I can use it as a permanent dash display.

you know you're in trouble when the ECU tells torque to use the GPS to go to a wrecking yard for the transmission

Lol yeah

Do I need to leave it hooked up to see mpg over a full tank or does the car have some kind of memory that stores the info for awhile?

For the basic reading of codes, sure a wired one is probably the most simplistic tool to have.

However, as others are pointing out, you can get a LOT of data out of a blue tooth that can be analyzed. Misfires being a great example. O2 sensors readings. There a number of things that you cannot do as well with the cabled variant.

If you don't think those are worthwhile, to each their own. But a 15-25 dollar scanner and a $5 app gets you the functionality of a $100 plus scanner.

I just ordered a WiFi one to use with iOS and the Carista app. It reads codes and you can modify some settings on Audi cars like you can with VCDS. 20$ for the reader and 20$ for the app, sure beats 300$+ for a Vag-Com cable.
