i just put together a cheap comp. i know it would have been cheaper to buy a cable and stuff but i had some parts laying around and an extra case so i just bought a slot A 750 to go on a board i already had and i also had to buy a video card (got one for 45 or so) and whala i put sat the comp in the entertainment system, i needed a dvd player in the bedroom so this was a good deal for me, also a good use for an older system

Just a heads up in case anyone is interested in optical cables. Only a few left though!!

man, i just ordered optical digital cable (toslink) cuz i found out the new dvd player i'm getting doesn't even have coaxial digital out (only has optical digital out - i think all panasonic dvdplayers has this flaw) so i searched many places and came to this:
svideo-store
3 feet (1m) toslink to toslink = 7.50 w/free standard ground shipping!!!
6 feet (2m) toslink to toslink = 8.50 w/free standard ground shipping
9 feet (3m) toslink to toslink = 9.50 w/free standard ground shipping
i think these cables are made by hosatech: they look like similar to this:
Hosatech_OPM-303 & under premium optic cables
let's say i'd be pissed if it was the wrong picture at the svideo store

i have no clue about the retailer, that's why i just bought one thing. couldn't find much about them, seems they are a yahoo merchant and uses secure website for CC.

Plus, if you become a member before buying, you get an extra discount on all prices. They have a 100ft S-video cable, with two of the wires shielded, gold ends for 16.50, shipping is 5.81. They have a very good rep, and I have never had a problem with them. All of the cables that I have bought are very good quality.

Just thought I'd share the info, we all want to save as much $ as possible here at AT!

awesome site, they get a place in my bookmarks. thanks takan!

I'll second that, great prices and they don't screw you with shipping.

cable companies use rg6 coaxial cable - spend the extra money for the quad shielded variety.
2 foil wraps and 2 braided wraps as opposed to the 1 and 1 of standard. ( much lower chance of picking up electrical interference.) Believe it or not, your local home depot has resonable prices on all types of cable.

Glad I could help you all out that's what AT hot deals is all about!

If ne1 thinks it's not worth the extra cost (~$10), plz let me know.

Cohagen, I use a similar setup with an RF modulator as PagannagaP (I too use the older model, with 3 RCA inputs in the back-not with the S-video--so that is nicer). And it does give a nice clear picture to my tv. But, let me tell you about some potential pitfalls. Depending on your video card, you might have problems with it turning on the tv-out with the RF modulator. The RF modulator does not turn on until it has a video signal going into it, and that can be a problem, if you need to detect a TV connected to your video card to enable its tv-out. Let me explain what I have to do with my old Geforce2 MX w/tv out. (I bought this card because it came with a dongle to split the tv-out into S-video and RCA.)

In order for my card (and my geforce3 ti200 on my computer is like this too) to turn on the tv-out, it has to detect that it is sending a signal to a "tv", and this has to be a direct connection. If I try to detect and enable my tv-out through the RF modulator, it doesn't work, because the RF modulator is "off" because there is no signal to it yet. So what I have to do is connect the RCA output from my video card to my VCR (my TV doesn't have a RCA input) with a homemade 50' RCA cable, and boy does that picture suck. But, connected like this, it will detect that it is connected to a "tv" and will enable tv-out. Now, that the RCA out on the video card has been enabled, I just switch it's connection to the RF modulator and now run coax to my tv. This works, but it is a royal pain in the butt. I've tried multiple ways of trying to make this situation easier, but to no avail. If you have a video card that you can enable tv-out without it actually being connected to a tv directly, then your idea will work, otherwise, it might be problematic like mine. I just wanted to give you a word of warning first before you get completely frustrated like I did first time I tried the same setup as you are thinking of. But, radioshack has a good return policy, and so it doesn't hurt to try it. Good luck.

WalMart charges like $17 for the video/audio. The Cable Shack has 6ft gold s-video + Rca audio cable for $5.50 plus ~$5 shipping.
Actually, Wal-Mart has some 6' S-Video cables in the $6.00 range. You can also find them at Target for $5.99 - which should amount to less than the Cable Shack price.

However, those prices posted for Toslink cables are great. $8.50 for a 6' cable - shipped is great. I just paid $14.99 + tax a few weeks ago at Target. Best Buy wants $20+ for the same cables.
