I haven't had anything other than factory sound in years. I don't want anything fancy, just a small basic sub and maybe some replacement speakers for the factory ones. One sub will be enough and I have and aftermarket Sony head unit

You'll need an amp to power the sub. This is a huge slippery slope my friend because once you add the amp and sub the rest of your system will become woefully inadequate.

Also need to give more info on what you want to get from the system, what you don't like from what you have now, what do you have now, what kind of car, what do you listen to, etc.

Yes I have installed numerous stereos, it will be in a Scion XA. I don't have a set budget but I don't want to spend much, I just want a little boost over factory sound. I have very minimum trunk space so a small an enclosure as possible on a sub

And buy the bass link used. I had one a decade ago in my wife's old car. Definitely adds some nice punch without being huge.

What's in it 6.5's all around? Replace them all with decent aftermarket, hook up a 4 channel amp, and rock out.

If you still feel the need for a sub hook it up after.

Didn't say if you want/need to retain factory head unit

I just bought a Kicker Hideaway for $150. It was a lot more but I know the Kicker brand and it had great reviews

I installed it last night, it fit under my seat perfectly and it is very loud and puts out more than enough bass. I had to turn the gain and bass low. I am not sure about the crossover and what frequency I should put it at though

If you need some good car audio gear, i'm selling a bunch of mine since I essentially can't upgrade my new car.

Kenwood KDC-X993 Head unit
Alpine PDX 4.150 Amp
JL Audio 10W3V2 Sub
JL Audio amp (forgot the model)

edit: oh, looks like you bought all your stuff already.

Depends on your speakers, but you prob want the crossover somewhere around 60-80Hz for the sub. Mine is set to 80, but my Focals can play frequencies down to 60Hz, but I'd rather have those tones come out of a larger sub than a 6.5'' speaker.

If you want less expensive, then get coaxial ones. They are easier to install, but won't be as nice to listen to as components.

Yeah I don't want to spend a lot. I was looking on Amazon, there are a ton of choices around $40-$60. Any suggestions?

There are so many choices, I'd honestly just go with what has 4+ star overall review with hundreds of user certified reviews. I'm partial to Focal & JL though. Hertz is another awesome name, but I doubt you'll find Focal or Hertz for 40-60 bucks. Usually can't go wrong with JL or Polk though.

I need some 6.5" speakers

Make sure you pay attention to the resistance. Most factory speakers are going to have 2ohm while most aftermarket seems to be 4ohm. They'll require a fair amount more power to drive. Either that or make sure you get very sensitive ones or you might be looking at an amp.

That's why Ppl said car audio is a slippery slope. It's almost not worth trying to cheap out. I spent 700 and I'm extremely happy on my part choices. If I had spent like 300, I'd probably barely notice a change.
