get that. we install those all the time at my friends shop, havent had one come back yet. good volume, decent sound. run a real amp wiring kit to it tho, dont skimp on that part. ive tried the rockford 10" and 12" powered subs as well, this one sounds way better and is more tunable
I already bought a sub, a Kicker Hideaway that is an 8" sub with a built in amp. I am very pleased, I may buy another to put in my CRV or I may try one of those cheaper models like the Rockville or SSL Lopro
What's your budget for the rest? I'd probably get like 100-120 dollar components, and a good amp wiring kit. Although you'd need another 2 channel amp most likely with even meh components, or else they will sound like dook.

I know a lot of people on some of my other car forums were putting the 2 ohm infinity speakers in for stock HUs. Similar loudness. I find them a bit bright, but They're not expensive and probably a good option if you don't want the trouble/expense of a a second amp.
If he gets cheaper speakers and doesn't amplify them, they probably won't sound a ton better than stock. But, he could opt to do that anyway and if he isn't happy add the amp in after.
