It's refurbished, and refurbished scanners are often bad news. Also, check Cnet and Deja.com and you'll see the reviews are pretty poor for this scanner.

I ordered the Astra2100U from buy.com during a free shipping promotion. With a coupon and a $10 rebate (still going on, see astra.com) I got it for $59.99. Not free, I admit, but I'm really happy with it. USB and quality is fantastic.

If you didn't get in on the Staples rebate for this scanner awhile back, then this is an excellent buy. I use this scanner in place of a better scanner I have because it takes up less space and does the job quicker. USB! =)

The other red flag is that Buy.com sells a LOT of canoscan refurb's. These things tend to have a lot of problems.

Of course, as mentioned here, so does the Epson 740, but lots of people seem happy with their refurbished models.

The Acer 620U/640U scanners are pretty decent, true 600DPI resolution... wait for Brands4Less to have another special... and you can get one at computers4sure.com for $30 after rebate... USB, and well rated. Works under Win2K too.

I just got my rebate check yesterday... 4 weeks! But I got mine at OfficeMax when they had it clerance for $50 ... so I paid $20 final cost (620U).

If you guys want a great scanner and are willing to spend a little more money, onvia.com has the canon 1200s scsi scanner for about $135 free shipping. it is true 1200x1200 and includes a free adaptec ultra scsi card (50 pin both internal and external). It is fast as heck and makes great scans. I have bought 4 scanners (microtek, visioneer, and a cheaper Canon) and returned them for sucking, but this one is great. FInally found a scanner that i like.

Screw CNET's review, this is a great scanner for that price. Wouldn't worry too much about refurb as it will carry manaf. warranty. As far as review stating dark scans, it's called adjusting the default settings before you scan. Never had a problem with this scanner (it's my third) and it's plugging along longer than my previous two. We're talking price here, for that price this scanner kicks ass.

I bought this scanner a few months back with the $110 rebates from Staples and Canon and paid $6.78 shipped for the unit. It works well, just a tad slow, but the quality is pretty good. Maybe not a good choice for photo professionals, but for the occasional CD scan...er...disregard that...photo scan of your children, it's very good....

I had a little trouble ordering. I had to call in my order. The lady I talked to said they are completely redoing the site and a brand new one should be running here in the next couple of days. All three people I knew who bought this scanner locally returned it, citing the images were to dark, the software sucked and a slew of other troubles. Just imagine this same scanner being refurbished! and have you ever tried to return something to Buy.com? Oh boy.

staples rock with there coupons...i got a speaker set for 30 dollars...2 situation chairs for 25....voodoo 3 pci for 34...enlight atx case with 1.44 floppy for 60 with a box of paper...staples is the best..
