Cheap intel quad core! $334

it uses socket 771 and is 1.86ghz. the compatible motherboard are all $200+ but the great thing is... you can stick 2 of them in there! so 8 cores i suppose...insane.

No. Very few games benefit from dual-core and then only on the slower dual-core like a P4-D or X2 3800+. With quad the other 2 cores will add nothing over dual at the same clock.

Yes and no at the same time. Some games are starting to become multi-threaded, so those games can and will benefit from a quad core. You will also see benefits to using the quad core over a single core in games due to the context switching that occurs to run both the game and perform the other duties of the OS at the same time. However, most games are not multi-threaded yet, and as such will do better on a system that has less, faster clocked CPU's then this processor.

Besides, there is only 3 motherboards that have a 16x PCI-E slot that support these CPU's and those 3 boards all cost approx $500... makes this an expensive game system...

Not to mention, you'll probably need FBDIMMs for the memory too. Still, with a bit of overclocking, you could still end up with an 8core gaming machine for less than the price of a QX6700.

Asus has a cheap-ish board that should work. I have no personal experience though. And you still need the FB DIMM's.

Edit: Note: 8X PCI-e slot. Not sure how much this effects video speed. My Asrock 775Dual-VSTA has only a 4X PCI-e slot and the speeds are only 2-5% slower than 16X PCI-e.

Just FYI if you are serious about building a Xeon system, that Gigabytye board doesn't have 16x PCi-e PHYSICAL slot so it's useless for a desktop system. The asus board i linked to has a 16x physical slot, but only runs at 8x. AFAIK the Asus board is the cheapest xeon 5100 board that has a 16x slot.

If you go through froogle the board is 10 bucks cheaper.......... It has two 16x slots so maybe someone can get some SLI action going.

Why do I do this to myself, my wallet freakin hates me.

Seems that for my case its better to wait for games to support multi-core CPUs better. By the time the games support it, there will be faster and cheaper options. I have an Athlon X2 4800+ right now and will probably step up to a Core2 next year after Vista comes out.
