Cheap socket A mobo

My server just died and I'm building a new one
I will get a Althon (probably about 1GHz) and I'm looking for a all-in-one mobo. So far I know PCChips (SiS) is not bad and I have seen some KM133 too. Which chipset is better in terms of stability?? (I believe the price is pretty close for me)

Is there any new chipset coming from VIA?? Should I wait for SiS w/DDR? when is it coming up??

Just finished building a system with the KM133 (MSI 6340) that I bought from NewEgg. No problems whatsoever during the install and so far so good. (It's been about a week now). One thing I really like about the KM133 is that it still has an available AGP slot if you decide not to use the onboard video.

Are you running Win2k? Which cards did you put into it?
I am looking to build a basic system I can load and unload OS's onto to learn and thought that this would be a great solution for me, but I am concerned about Linux compatabiliby.

When it comes to Linux, you basically just have to try. All of the major chipsets are usually supported, it just won't come out and spec. a particular card.

That is about what my Linux friends are telling me also. They are mostly *ntell pimps, and usually turn up their noses at my AMD systems.
I think it is jelousy--they are all cheaper and faster than similar ones my friends are building.
Time to look for new friends?????

I'm running Win98 SE. Not sure about Linux compatibility. All I had was a modem in the third PCI slot and I used the onboard video and sound. Setup was a breeze and I even used the drivers off the CD and everything went smooth. It will get much heavier use this week so I'll see how it goes.

Both VIA and SiS have Linux support up and running for their integrated chipsets.

SiS has very complete support for the 730 chip - graphics, LAN, and sound have Linux support, and even the AMR modem that PC-Chips includes with the M810LMR seems to have working Linux drivers.

VIA's KM133 chipset runs the "savage" graphics driver. Beware, only the 686A/B's sound engine is supported so far, the newer 8231's four-channel sound is not. If a 686 is used on the board, LAN will be separate, the 8231 contains a VIA LAN chip that also has Linux support.

I'd go SiS, definitely. Much more mature chipset, drivers and mainboards.
