Looking to get new tires for my 2006 Mustang GT. Got an estimate from a local place of $173.98 per tire for P235/55R17 98W with a 40k mile warranty. Looking to get some other (cheaper) options hopefully. Any recommendations of where to look?

i just got a set of goodyear potenza grid g019 for 113 per tire + mounting/balancing. (this was for 225/45/r17 so yours may be a bit more) mine came out to $540. tires have been excellent so far. they have a 50k mile warranty. are you looking for all seasons or summer tires?

All seasons. Got about 40k miles on my OEM tires and got a flat the other day that can't be repaired. Figured it was time for new tires.

Not gonna get much cheaper for tires for that car.

2 things I NEVER skimp on. 1. Brakes 2. Tires.

a set of 4 tires for a PT Cruiser is about $500, so $680 for a mustang isn't out of the question. It's your decision if you want to spin out and crash and kill a family in a minivan on the freeway.

I don't know a whole lot about tires. Tirerack is recommending the Goodyear Eagle GT at $124 each and the Pirelli PZero Nero M&S PINNA at $79 each. I don't race with my car and rarely drive faster than 80. Am I going to notice much difference between these two? Is one going to last significantly longer than another?

I believe the Pirelli's are the same (or very similar) to the PZero Nero's that came stock on my car.

i didn't know they sold Z (w/y) tires that have a warranty. theres no way i could even come close to getting 40K out of the ones on my car.

User reviews for tires at tirerack are about as useful as user reviews for hardware at newegg...

OP, unless you're gonna drive above 149 mph, you don't NEED Z-rated tires...you can get by just fine with ""lesser" rated tires.

According to the Tire Rack, the original equipment tires for that car are Pirelli's:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/...g=(Y)&minSpeedRating=V

At $79 each plus shipping and installation...which should be less than $40 each.

Obviously, you can spend a LOT more on tires if you so choose...here's Tire Rack's "Best Sellers" in that tire size and speed rating:

I tend to like all season ones, as I don't have to do any tire changing in fall/spring. But the key is knowing how to drive in the conditions and know your car's handling. Winter tires are much better then all seasons so I have to drive keeping in mind I can't do a suddent stop or suddent turn.

That's about what I paid for my tires on a Buick Lasabre. Had original white wall ones, got a flat, would of looked retarded changing just one tire (and they were OLD) so changed all 4. Just plain all seasons, 600 bucks.

Save some money and check out the Pirelli PZero Nero M&S PINNA (Ultra High Performance All-Season) $79 each at tirerack. FWIW, since I don't try to break any land speed records and don't cruise the hwy at 130+, I run all season tires on my Vette.

Those are actually what I ordered. Hopefully they'll ship today.

I am about to drop $500 on Dunlop SP sport signature tires (205-50-17). I was going to get them a discount tire direct, but found out that Hogan Tire will match online prices. Yes, 17 in. tires are expensive. So much for a mazda 3 being an economy car....I suppose that is what I get for wanting a "sporty" economy car.

wow, you're doing it wrong
Not really. Many PT's came with 17" wheels and to me any decent tire with any performance abilities run at least $90 each. If that bob is walking out of the tire store having spent $500 for 4 tires, mounted and balanced and such, that's a good deal for good tires.

You'd probably think I was nuts for spending $800 for tires for my gf's Subaru, but hey, that's you. I think its money well spent and so does she.

FWIW, I was able to bargain with my local DiscountTire for less per tire than what's available on TireRack (GY TripleTreads in this case).

TireRack: $113x4 + 13.56x4 (road hazard warranty) + $58 shipping + $15x4 (local mount/balance) = $624.24 + a few dollars extra like tire disposal and taxes.

DiscountTire: $560 out the door with their optional (and better) road hazard warranty.

...I imagine it just depends on the person you're trying to negotiate with.

I took a gamble and bought Nexen n3000 215/55/17 tires for my G35 from a local seller. They're not a well known brand but the reviews were okay. Tires noise is reasonable a,tread wear is okay and wet traction is good. I have about 10k miles on them now with no trouble. Paid ~$290 installed and balanced for all four and I'm happy with the purchase.
