Is it possible for her to get legit without reformating/re-installing again? I told her about the XP home upgrade at BB for $60 and she wants to do that if possible. But I heard that home/pro keys wont work on corporate editions. Is this true? Can she buy the xp home upgrade and use the key to make her pc okay again?

My guess is that she will have to re-install with the new home upgrade disk. Which means she will want me to do it for free.

Edit: I have been PM'ed... looks like I heard right.

what operating system did she have before the "fix" ?

Either 98se or ME, I can't remember. My guess is she never gave the kid her install disks and he just used what he had. I remember back when it happened too..... the punk did abosultely nothing besides wipe it and install an illegal operating system. No updates, not even SP1. He didn't even install the audio drivers. It was probably the easiest money that kid ever made. It just makes me realize how many people out there (like my aunt and her kids) have no idea how to work with computers, and how many are being ripped off.

Did I just repeat myself?
Did I just repeat myself?

Is it possible to use the same Windows 98 install cd (one license) to upgrade 3 different computers to Windows XP (using upgrade version, 3 seperate licenses ofcourse) without breaking the rules?

So it breaks down to 1 Win98 & 3 WinXP Upgrade = 3 PC's with legit OS?

I have always used OEM.

Thanks 1cheap. I actually saw that after I posted. Note it is actually $10 cheaper than the best buy deal.

We probobly see a lot more of these deals this summer since vista is going to hit the shelves next year.

yes 5 years and counting. And a horrendous number of fixes, patches, more code bloat, etc.

you can always buy a legit version of xp and do a repair and all the data will remain intact.

Would you be able to use the same older Windows version CD for multiple copies of the upgrade?

For example: I have a legit copy of Win 98. If I needed XP on two computers, would I be able to use the same Win 98 CD for two different copies of the upgrade version?

you can't upgrade from pro to home, that is not a upgrade.

and you can easily download Sp2 and all the post SP2 downloads from this site, burn um to a disc, and send them to your friend.

I dont know what campuses you are looking at, but they are ripping you off (though usually the bookstore is trying to make a profit...the deals are from the campus tech services).

My friend picked me up a lovely twin pack of XP pro (one disk/key for 32bit, one for 64bit) for something like $2 at the university of minnesota.

You just have to be a student...
