upgrades do no compare with the actual full retail product, I always push for the full OS version, and not an upgrade, in the situation where you need to do a fresh wipe, you only have the upgrade CD available?

it's a retail boxed Microsoft product...so of course you get the CD. If you can find someone selling a cheap copy of Windows 95/98 so you can do a quick install/upgrade, this is a steal. i was gonna post it, but figured someone else already had...and lo and behold, here it is

You do not need to have an installed OS to use an upgrade disk. You can do a fresh install. The only thing is that you must have an older version of Windows on CD handy. So, do your fresh wipe. After the graphical installation starts, you will be prompted for your old Windows CD. The installer checks to make sure it is valid, then proceeds with a CLEAN install of Windows XP.

This is an excellent deal - you get the full OS for 2/3rds the price of an OEM.

Anybody tried to PM it at CC, Staples or elsewhere?
Might be able to get it even lower.

Full retail version? Please! That's just not AT style. I haven't purchsed a retail XP...ever and I've built dozens of XP boxes...either OEM or upgrade is the smart way to go.

Upgrade is same as retail, but you need a previous windows disk for it to install. (I purchased XPpro when it first came out as an upgrade, same OS as retail but it asks for older disk during install.)

Did I just repeat myself?

Two things:

1) I wish they did this with XPPro

2) I have used windows 3.1 floppies to get an XP Upgrade to install

Yes, best way to save money.

That's what I did also. It's not like an old win98 disk is hard to come by.

As long as you have an existing XP install on the partition before you start setup, the installation process won't prompt you to insert another disc, it'll verify your upgrade status from the existing partition, which you can then format during setup.

XP Pro Upgrade (not academic ver.) can be had for $50 from many campus bookstores, at least I know it can by the faculty.

Will a Windows 95 or 98 upgrade cd allow me to install this Windows XP upgrade, or do I need a full version of Windows to do it?

Actually, depending on your program and school, you can get it for free through the MS Academic Alliance a lot of times. I know this was the case for pretty much every MS product for CS students at my school, and a few other apps for kids in other programs.

Does CompUSA not ship orders? I click Check Out, and it directs me to a ZIP-code text box, and it tells me then that there are no stores within 50 miles for pickup.
I don't want pickup, I want it shipped, but it won't seem to allow that.

Aww dammit all. In-store pickup only???? The hell is up with that.
Best part - I'm in Erie, PA at college. Home is in Allentown, PA on the other side of the state. No stores within 50 miles of either store.
Lovely deal.
