I may be going to taiwan this summer- i was wondering if i would find cheaper prices for computer parts over there. And if so- where would i go? i guess id just have to search for shops...
Generally all electronics(other than the elite brand names like Sony, Panasonic Apple etc) are cheaper in Asia. Motherboards especially since majority of them are made in Taiwan. Names like Asus, Abit, DFI, MSI, Leadtek are all Taiwan based.. so happy shopping!
for some reason, it is about the same price if not cheaper to purchase computer peripherals in the US (with tax and shipping included). Some say it is because of volume.
I did a comparsion with HongKong prices... things come out about the same. the only exception I can think of are those small USB peripherals (USB mice, USB light)
I can agree that it's not much cheaper, your looking at either equal or at most 5% discount compared to US prices.
How can you say that, absolutely not though? I was in Hong Kong earlier this year and I picked up an ASUS laptop charger and HDD module for my Asus W3V laptop, and it costed me around $50 US for both after some bargaining, this would have set me back like $80-100 for the same thing in the US.
In general, I find USA mail order prices as low or lower than prices in Asia, even in countries where the goods are made. On some specific items you can sometimes find bargains and game software is less expensive, but hardware is usually cheaper in the USA.

This is a fact. I travel Asia year round and I still get my hardware from US Internet stores. There are items which are cheaper and also available but definitely not main hardware parts like mobo, rams, cpu and video's. Peripherals maybe a little cheaper but not that much. You're better off buying from the US internet stores, especially on Sale items!
The only things significantly cheaper will be small accessories such as cables, fans, adapters, etc. These may have signficant markdowns from what you normally see here as western stores use these items to boost their margins over the losses incurred by selling mainstream hardware. Quality name brand stuff (i.e. Apple) in particular will likely cost you more there.
thanks for the info everyone- i was looking for a a new mobo, wire sheething kit, and a cpu cooler. It seems like it may just be easier to do it in the US after all.
