The absolute cheapest 4MB L2 C2D processor is the E6550 at $170, but it's not a good overclock because it only has a 7x multiplier. The best chip to buy if you want a 4MB L2 chip is the E6750, at around $180~ with an 8x multiplier. 3.4GHz is almost guaranteed, although nothing is for certain with overclocking.

I see you have an E4300 right now. There's no point in upgrading past that except to a quad-core Q6600 or one of the new 45nm quads coming around February or March. Even the new 45nm E8400, replacing the E6750, wouldn't give you much of an increase.

i would stick with that e4300, that extra 2mb L2 cache and 130mhz or so wont make a world of a difference.

Why are the E6550's a bad OC?

Mine and my brothers both hit 3500+ on 500+fsb rather easily.

My 6550 pwns. 500fsb easy. Any G0 cpu should hit at the least 3.4ghz.

Consider yourselves lucky then b/c how many boards do you know can handle 500+ FSB 24/7 ? The stress on the PWMs, not to mention the RAM, is totally unnecessary when you have plenty of good chips with 8 or higher multipliers that can reach 3.2ghz easy. Total core speed is really the most important factor, rather than the different combos of multi x FSB used to get there. I'd recommend anyone to stick with at least an 8 multiplier CPU if they're targeting a 3.2ghz or greater OC.

As brencat said, the 7x multiplier makes a high overclock put serious stress on other components and requires you to select a good, potentially more expensive motherboard and more expensive memory. The average mobo is not going to run 500+ FSB easily, and if it does do so it certainly puts a lot of unneccessary strain on it. You also run into the problem of having high-clocked memory, when a chip with an 8x or 9x multiplier would do fine with cheap DDR2-800.

If the E6550 was much cheaper than the E6750, then it could be justified. However, it's only $15-20 cheaper, and it's definately worth $15-20 for an 8x multiplier.

For a e6550 to hit 3500 (7x500), you need a top notch mobo and RAM. CPUs with higher multis give you greater flexibility.
