Just wondering if there are any "bargain" drives yet, for PCI-E 4.0 NVMe? What would the minimum size be to actually build a drive that would be fast enough to "push" PCI-E 4.0 performance?

the ones I know about so far:
Corsair MP600
Sabrent Rocket 4.0
Inland Pro 4.0 (?)

MP600 1TB says this:
  • Extreme Gen4 storage performance: A PCIe Gen4 x4 controller delivers up to 4, 950 MB/s sequential read and 4, 250 MB/s sequential Write speeds, for blazing fast read, write, and Response times.

MP600 500GB says this:
  • Extreme Gen4 Storage Performance: A PCIe Gen4 x4 controller delivers up to 4,950 MB/s sequential read and 2,500 MB/s sequential write speeds, for blazing fast read, write, and response times.

So, it looks like a 1TB NVMe is the smallest that you would want to go for max sequential speeds.

Full list of E16-based drives here.

You would need 1TB to hit maximum sequential writes, however future 4.0 controllers and newer flash will hit higher speeds than the E16.

Are they due out this year?

As announced at CES 2020, yes. The one we'll see soonest is probably the Samsung 980 Pro, which should be MLC-based but capable of 6500/5000 MB/s (no SLC caching presumably). It will be a simple matter to hit 7 GB/s or so for reads (maximum for x4 PCIe 4.0), writes have more overhead so more like 6.1 GB/s maximum, easily obtainable in SLC mode. To some extent it's a controller limitation with the E16, e.g. bus speed, with the next iteration having +50%.

The 980 Pro will be using MLC memory so i'm expecting it to be expensive and max capacity is suppose to be 1TB.

I do think they will release and evo version later as they usually do.

NewMaxx - News articles published a few days ago indicate Samsung will release the 980 Pro sometime in August. Very little in the way of additional technical info right now.

Oh, I I know. It was first hinted at in a tweet on June 9th but was semi-confirmed via its NRRA status ten days later. Actually it was suggested as early as June 5th with their announcement of memory ramp-up which always corresponds to a new layer launch, although I waited on my sub until the 22nd because I wanted confirmation from inside the industry. So I've been following the story closely. Samsung accidentally gave the wrong date during CES (for "more details" but was mistaken as possible launch) which I cleared up thanks to the reviewer here.

In any case, we know program latency is moving from 500µs to 450µs which means hitting 5000 MB/s with MLC (if no SLC) vs. 2300 MB/s with the 512GB 970 Pro, suggesting double the interleaving (64 -> 128) along with a faster bus, although you're right that we have very little technical information right now (Samsung's earlier 3D MLC was 256Gb/die, which gives you an idea on planes/die and also hints at a new controller for that many LUNs). All speculation on my part, but hey I like to have fun with it.

Appreciate your database and I do link to it from my resources if you haven't caught me on Reddit.
