Cheapest (high quality) Whey Protein Isolate?

Hey guys,

I'm currently looking to buy some whey protein. I avoid the whey concentrate due to recent research I've seen that shows higher levels of contaminants. As a result, I pay more for the whey protein isolate. It has gotten a lot more expensive than when I last bought it so I'm looking to the collective of ATHF for some suggestions. I like to keep it simple so vanilla would be ideal, but I'm willing to consider other flavors depending on price. Any suggestions? Post price/poundage/website - I'd appreciate it. Thanks gents/ladies.

I can help you, but how much protein are you looking to consume a day. The best protein on the market in my opinion especially when it comes to isolate is VPX SRO. Been using it for several weeks now, it expensive though. But I have tried and used 30 brands and types easily. The one nasty side effect in a lot of protein powders is all the added sodium, sugar, and cholesterol. This one is super super clean. I have dropped a couple of pounds, not holding as much water. I combine this with Nlarge3, another clean protein. There are some other ones, but these two give me a pretty complete addition of protein without all the garbage.

For comparison take like MP Combat protein, a popular protein, its good stuff. But that stuff has a whopping 70+ mg of cholesterol per scoop.

Bodybuidling.com is probably the best overall and they have excellent customer service. Can't go wrong with them.

I'm not terribly worried about cholesterol intake. Research shows that few people are sensitive to dietary cholesterol (meaning cholesterol intake doesn't usually affect blood cholesterol levels). I've had my cholesterol taken on low and high cholesterol diets without much issue.

I am a bit more concerned about sugar content. I'd rather it be low or sweetened with something like sucralose. Obviously, I'm not that picky, but too much sugar isn't ideal. Trying to use this as something to supplement by girlfriend's diet as well, since she has Crohn's disease.

Get a 5 pound, thank me later. The only reason I switched off of this was I wanted to eliminate as much sodium as possible. I have a sensitive stomach, this presented no problem, has tons of great flavors, beware of Birthday Cake, lol. This is a hydrolyzed whey to boot. And when I say this mixes with a spoon in like 10 seconds, it completely dissolves. And this will last a good bit for the both of you. One of these would last me about 5 weeks and I light up some protein powder. One more note, beware of Birthday Cake, it tastes just like birthday cake .

I use Optimum Nutrition's 100% Whey Gold Standard with the French Vanilla Creme flavor. It's probably one of their better vanilla based flavors (tastes better than regular vanilla and vanilla ice cream).

They seem to always be on sale on bodybuilding.com and Amazon. Here's a link to Amazon for your consideration:

Amazon ON 100% Whey Gold Standard

ON gold standard is more so a concentrate (blend).

My choices for an isolate are dymatize iso100 and AST VP2..... Though they are hydrolized isolates

Is the labeling incorrect for ON Gold Standard? It states that it contains whey protein isolates but I don't really know the difference between the blends and the isolates.

Protein Blend(Whey Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Concentrate, Whey Peptides),

it contains isolate, but also concentrate.

calculate the % protein per serving... 24 grams out of a 32 gram serving and it puts it only at 75% protein, and 25% other stuff.

now compare AST VP2..
Whey Protein Isolate, Hydrolyzed Whey Protein Isolate

23 grams on a 28 gram serving -> 82%+

or dymatize iso100
Hydrolyzed Whey Protein Isolates
25 grams on 31 gram serving -> 80%+

I'm sure there are others out there with higher % protein per serving, but at 75%, they are not using all isolates. Isolates can be 90%+ pure. You also need to figure they have flavoring, sweeteners, and other stuff in the mix, so unless you are buying straight isolates most brands will be in the 80's%

I just finished a 5lb of BSN Whey Iso. It was around the 50-60 dollar mark. Taste was... okay. It was my first iso so I can't comment on it based on others. I generally use a blend by BSN. The blends taste amazing and contain more than just whey (obviously).

I might try the iso that classy linked though. Dymatize usually makes pretty good tasting product.

I have never seen isolate available in Walmart.

Body Fortress Whey Isolate is sold at Walmart, it's a newer brand. I used it for a bit but it's still more expensive, and I don't trust it as much as Optimum Nutrition's Gold Standard. I like the Cookies and Cream flavor, it blends with just about everything.

For nighttime supplementation or simply a long lasting protein, ON's Vanilla Tri-celle Casein is where it's at. A bit more expensive than Gold Standard, but it does what is advertised - slow absorption due to increased molecule size.

All in all, I used to be a protein snob and use Isolate only but think that in the end supplementation is only going to play a small role in your diet compared to what you're actually eating. Eat a lot of fish/chicken/eggs and there's no need to break the bank on isolate vs concentrated whey. My .02

As always my recommendation is going to be true nutrition, just be sure to find their discount codes online. I tend to buy 10+lbs at a time for more discounts.

I use NOW 100% whey protein isolate, unflavored. Prices for it seem to be going up substantially.

Thanks for all the info. I had no idea there was this much delineation in whey protein consumption.

ON is still good stuff, just in the context of this discussion it isn't a pure isolate.

and isolate is still the most common ingredient

there are certainly a lot of bad sport nutrition products you could buy but i would say that on is not one of them
