Cheapest solution for notetaking?

I've decided to bring my desktop to school and leaving my laptop at home for my dad. I'm not a particularly diligent student, and I don't take very good notes either way, but I much prefer typing to writing.

I wonder if there exists an item like this:
Fairly light but not hugely important (I used to lug my Dell Inspiron E1505 around and not really mind it)
Boots up quickly
Doesn't need any real processing power or video power (basically just word processing and maybe a web browser)
Good battery life
Storage space not important--probably just a flash drive will be plenty for notes..
Really really cheap!

I was kind of interested in the EEE, but given how limited my needs are, I was wondering if there was something even lower priced.

Thanks

The cheapest eee is only $300, which is cheaper than the current Nokia 810 handheld with mini-keyboard.

It's the cheapest you'll find for a brand-new laptop right now.

You could get an off-lease Dell D610 for about the same price if you want Windows XP instead (using the 20% off D610 coupon on the front page):

I guess what I meant was I don't really need a laptop.

I basically just need a keyboard and a screen and a word processor. Is something like this available?

PDA + keyboard. I think I payed $100 for my bluetooth wireless stowaway keyboard. Just look for a used PDA with builtin bluetooth. The HP 2210 (IIRC the exact number) has builtin bluetooth, a compact flash slot, a consumer grade IR port with software, and runs Windows Mobile 2003). I also think the iPAQ 1945 has bluetooth, but I would recommend the 2210 over it. I use my trusty five year old iPAQ 4150 with bluetooth.

For software, you can use "Notes" which is built into WM 2003. You can type text and then switch to pen mode to draw anywhere, including over the text.

Not sure if you are looking for a PDA, but it fits your needs. Great battery life, instant on (no booting!), storage limited by SD/compact flash very light <5oz. for PDA, low processing power=good battery life while still being able to browse the web. Price...I say buy a used PDA (>WM 2003) and a wireless keyboard.

EDIT: I also forgot a handheld pc. See www.usedhandhelds.com.

this really isnt a bad idea. my mother has a large inspiron 15xx series and is going on a cruise in a couple of weeks, and is seriously considering just taking her Dell Axim and a bluetooth keyboard for the trip since she has a wifi adapter for it because she doesnt want to carry the bulky laptop with her
