I'm moving and don't have much stuff. But not everything will fit into my small car. I need to be able to fit a futon, coffee table, TV stand, and other small misc stuff. What is the cheapest way I can pack this? I looked up Uhaul where you can get one of those things to attach to the back of your car (like a tow) and it costs about $110.

Any cheaper alternative or better company to look into?

Probably not for just 300 miles. I'm moving 1500 miles and the quotes either way (truck v. moving company) are through the roof. Probably should just bite the bullet and get a small uhaul with a car dolly.

If you're able to tow a trailer, I'd say to go that method...otherwise look into Enterprise cargo van rentals as that's what I used once. I went through Costco's travel website and got a great price on the rental. If you have friends to help you load everything up, you could easily make the trip there and back in one day.

Did not figure Uhaul was that cheap. I'd go with that. Do you have to bring the trailer back after or do you just leave it at the local Uhaul in your new city?

Of course you'd have to get a hitch installed on your car if you don't have one. If you do have one then it's a no brainer.

It looks like they only have full trucks and the quote was around 400

I rented a 24' uhaul for a 80 mile move and it was less than $100, and I rented a 24' penske for a 1600 mile move and it was less than $500.

I imagine you can do way better than $400.

You can get reduced prices when returning it to places with high demand, you can give them a call to have them take a look.

Rented a 16' uhaul to move 80 miles for around $300 after taxes/insurance/gas. (Yes I know CC's cover insurance on rental cars, wasn't too sure on trucks and didn't want to bother paying out of pocket if I crashed then filing a claim with CC)

If you can tow one of their trailers, that's the best deal because you don't have to pay gas for a truck.

Futon, coffee table, TV stand...

Have you thought about selling these items before you move and then replacing them once you get to your new place?

Just an idea...

Having done this, my conclusion was Uhaul. I went with a trailer because it was cheaper, but in retrospect it might have been a better value to put the wear/tear on one of their trucks instead.

Hard to argue with $110 for 300 miles, really that's pocket change in the context of moving to a different city.

Is anyone moving with you or are you going solo? If someone is coming with you, sell off what you can, rent a van (not a truck) and have the other person drive your car.
