That is a pretty awesome deal, only downside is you have to go look up the codes off the CD or use google instead of having the definition on board.

FWIW, it's available from Amazon for $19.99. At the very least, if you end up with a dud, it'll be simple to return it to Amazon vs returning it to a 3rd party seller via newegg (from my experience) Good price though.

An OBD2 interface w/ bluetooth will work with a smartphone, tablet, or laptop (with bluetooth radio) and provide more information than just a code when using an app such as Torque Lite.

I'd prefer a CAN bus interface for my laptop.... miss my days working with a GM supplier. Newer GM vehicles require a Tech-II Tool to program keyfobs (no more trick ignition sequences) - If I had an interface, I could send the commands myself. -- sigh --

When I was working on an MP3 radio, I had written a nice bit of code to simulate the XM satellite , Body Controller and OnStar modules so we could run the radios on a desktop (and later do Quality Assurance testing). Sending the required command to reprogram the keyfobs to the Body Controller would have been easy.

At any rate, these OBDII tools are handy to have to clear out the occasional "Check Engine" light. Just had to clear one out myself for "Emissions leak" on my 2000 Venture Van.

Yes, but typically you will have to research just what the code means anyway when you go about trying to fix it. At least that's the way it has worked out for me with my pesky p0420 catalyst system below efficiency! I think its an exhaust leak before the downstream o2 sensor. At least now i can reset it when it comes on.

What is a decent, reasonably priced bluetooth interface for this?

That gives me an idea what to look for. I didn't know if all ELM 327 BT adapters are created equal

Think it's worth it to pick up a few of these to flip locally?

Flip, you mean sell at a profit, I doubt it.

Also most gear heads have a couple, I have I think 3 different types, so no, not a good gift.

OTOH if you don't have one, you should. Not that hard to look up and print a page of common error codes for your car to keep with it either.

Thanks, OP! You saved me from a bargain one with a 50% success rate, which I'd just pulled the trigger on, but was able to cancel the order. You're my new best friend!

Having to look up the codes kind of sucks. I would have to run out to the garage then back to the house and look up the code. I still may pick one up just to reset the light. I keep getting the check engine light for air flow but there is nothing wrong.

Also advance auto parts will let them use one for free with one that can tell you what is wrong. Also advance auto parts said the one they use costs over $100. So this is hot deal for this even if it only gives codes.

theyre basically a cel reset device. in other words, its a little easier then pulling the battery cable off for 5 minutes. the codes they actually read are so generic that you can get the same ideas by observing then engine yourself.

model specific scanners are where its at. they can pull more then just the few dozen generic codes that budget scanners can read. they tap into all of the car's specialized computers and read every single code, just the same way the factory can. the amount of information you can get is staggering, in my 99 ford truck alone there are over two thousand different parameters. its not like its just going to outright tell you what to fix on your car, but most of the time it actually does.

Thanks!

Just got mine in the mail today. Works exactly as advertised. also has the status of emissions systems to make sure they are "ready" before going to the DEQ.

Many cars have a reset interval (20-100 miles) of driving between resetting a CEL and letting the systems trigger another CEL. Going to the DEQ while in this "safe mode" will just waste your 30 bucks since they will see the systems aren't ready with their equipment and tell you to come back after charging you for the test.

Saves you from a glitch that isn't a real problem, not from a real problem, but can point a finger at maybe a simple part replacement instead of being at the mercy of the mechanic. Something flaky or intermittent, maybe it helps.

Its a slippery slope, try and save a few bucks by fixing your car yourself and you may end up liking working on the car and buy a garage full of tools.

I bought one from HF for about $50 and it's been great. It provides pretty specific info (including transmission and HVAC computer codes) and diagnosed a failing coil on my wife's Ford.

I think the limited info available on this unit makes it a whole lot less useful.
