Damn, I didn't know parrots lived so long.

It varies quite a bit. From 30-75 years depending on the species. But yeah, generally a lot longer than most other domesticated animals.

My girlfriend has two African Greys, they're crazy smart. Huge vocabularies and they even understand many of the words they're saying.

i've had a grey for around 17 years, now. Very smart, perpetually locked into a 3 year old childs mind set LOL. The one I got was shipped back and forth between divorcing owners, so he never had a stable home. He's a little on the " don't touch me" side, but we get along great. As far as vocabulary, yeah, he's amazing. What's funny is, you'll try to repeat something for him to pick up, for months, and he'll never say it once: however sometimes he'll hear a noise once, and you'll hear it 40 times a day for 2 years LOL. Damn, them love mimicking noises- mine just sees me going near the refrigerator, and I get the following: tinkling noise of ice cubes in a glass, pop top noise of opening a can od sode, and finally the burble noise of pouring into a glass.

Ours make the smoke detector sound... I have since learned the smoke detector is not a kitchen timer. MIL watched him for a couple of weeks and was looking for the fire or smoke detector that needed batteries.

What are a of the country do you live in? What do they run now?

I have always wanted an African Grey ... they are not too flashy, and vocabulary off the charts. The idea of having an animal that could outlive me has its merits. Losing a pet is so tough, and with dogs we are guaranteed to go through it every xx years.

With birds, I worry about good vet care, climate, disease and accidents.
Also, birds crap every 20 mins like clockwork ...

Congrats OP!

they live like 80 years. it will outlive you. plan on cleaning cages for a long long time

I like birds but they live a bit too long and are a bit too messy for my tastes.

We have had them. Not my type of pet. I'll stick with fish.

Just make sure you put into your will who will receive the Grey as it will, barring accident, injury, disease, etc., long outlive you.

I think its getting ready to kill you, after seeing it could end up as chicken wings.

That bird would be in my cat's mouth. She has killed quite a few birds, a number of mice, and even killed 2 young rabbits (fuzzy baby bunnies?).

my dog is apparently a good bird killer. he snatches em right out of the air in the back yard. hell, he nabbed a cat jumping over the fence one time. that was a bad scene. but he wont go near my cockatiel. i think hes afraid of it.
