Hmm. So why don't they just attach a mini-sized lava-lamp to the top of the CPU's heatspreader, and add some lighting for effect, and call it a day then?

PS. I don't think that I can ever read a P4 CPU spec-sheet and think about the #THERMTRIP signal the same way ever again...

Heres an idea.....

Dig a hole 8 inches wide, 16 feet deep down where the temp is the same all year round. Go to a hardware store get a 16 foot length of 8" PVC and two caps. Cap one end and shove it down. Install NPT threads in the other cap. Cap the other end. Get a two large AC pumps to pump water to your computer and back. Get water block. BAM! Silent where you computer is. And more practical than this thing.

and if it worked well, it might even have it's place, but how well could a heat pipe work if it was laid out horizontally the way it will in most tower cases?

surely they should just start integrating water cooling into system cases etc now, thats rediculously large. im sure you can make a nearly silent water cooling system integrated into a chassis. i mean your not gonna eliminate noise are you, cd drives, and hard drives all still rely on moving parts, so whats one more low speed 120mm fan?

It's not that big though. Its LONG, but at only 112x112, that's slightly larger than my XP90. Heavy? Lighter than the Zalman 7000 series. I use the V1000 case from Lian Li, which mounts the motherboard upside down, kinda BTXish. This heatsink (and any other long heatsink that reaches across the case) is premium for my case. Also, since my 400 dollar 6800GT would be above the heatsink, I have nothing to worry about.

Hell, call me crazy but I might even consider getting me one of these, it's just as expensive as any other high end CPU cooler. I wonder how the performance is?

If it were made by anyone other than TT you know we'd all buy one

EDIT: PS - the thing is so fugly, if I installed one I'd build a box to cover it because I'd be embarassed having that thing in my case.

Pretty well, actaully. Most newer HP hoolers aren't just empty pipes, and use textured wicks and nets inside them so that capilary action can do the work. This causes a slight hit in efficiency of each heatpipe, but allows the coolers to even work upside-down with almost no performance loss.

You joke about it, but I saw a mod where a guy did just that. He was totally bent on getting a 100% silent PC, so he buried a big water tank in the back yard for his water cooling with a borrowed back hoe. Put all the pumps outdoors, and since the tank was underground the temps were below ambient.
A quick google search didn't turn up any links offhand, but I read about it a couple years ago.
