Those are amazing weapons! Just hope we don't have to resort to them and hopefully, no war will happen at all...

I forget what source said this, but they claimed that the OICW would be cheaper than the equivalent M16 Package with underslung grenade launcher and all the trimmings. It seems hard to believe though...

The avg infantryman wouldnt have them, so I doubt anyone would be walking 30 miles with on.

Not that I'm any sort of weapons expert ( i don't know jack about guns, although that's more than most), I think I'd rather have an Ak47 or m16. That thing just looks like it is waiting for an excuse to break. too fancy for when you life depends on it, not to mention heavy.

just my .02

Wow some of those weapons discussed are pretty amazing..

<< But the upper barrel can hurl 20mm shells more than half a mile to explode in the air over the target and unleash a rain of death. >>

<< Another new deadly weapon is the super-cavitating torpedo which can travel under water at the speed of sound before eventually launching into the air.

Then it becomes a smart missile, flying directly to its target, allowing US warships and submarines to attack a target hundreds of miles away with minimum warning.
>>

<< But by far the largest piece of new kit is the airborne laser ? a killer beam fired from a modified Boeing 747 jumbo jet.

The laser carries a massive two megawatts of energy ? enough to power several small towns ? but is so accurate it can pick out and destroy an individual in a crowd 180 miles away without harming people around him.
>>

<< The smallest new fighters are called Robot Swarm ? thousands of tiny machines concealed within an armoured vehicle that smashes its way into buildings.

Then the robots ? looking similar to radio-controlled toys ? swarm out like ants, each carrying explosives, stun guns or poison gas.
>>

GOD DAMN!

One bone I have to pick with our military leaders- they've completely forgotten the whole KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) Principle. Dirt will get into EVERY possible crevice, Troops will forget the basics of how to use their equipment in the heat of battle, troops may not have the education need to use complicated hardware , etc.

As Far as rifles are concerned, it's hard to beat the Kalashnikov- rugged, easy to use, no "real" special training required- heck I'd bet you could train a chimp to clean one out, and operate one.

I'm curious as to the technology behind the laser weapon. I'm somewhat of a laser optics expert and I know that they were trying to use high power lasers for launching rockets into space.....

well now that I think about it is quite possible. but I would be curious as to the wavelength that they are using......

The weapon is too large. Making any move with it would be a huge pain. I would rather have an M16 and a side arm anyday.

ROFL!!! I cracked up at the pic. I remember seeing this before but my god. It looks like something a 13 year old would draw for a comic book cause he thought it looked cool. Man, I hope they do a lot of field testing with this before playing with it in the mud.

Actually, supercavitation is a good thing. In general, cavitation isn't because it creates noise and renders you (usually a submarine) very visible on sonar.

What supercavitation is is essentially it is a really "extreme" version of cavitation, in which a single bubble is formed around the moving object, completely. what this essentially does is reduce the drag against an object by the surrounding water, and enables the object (namely, a torpedo) to go really really fast and have potentially a long range. The Russians have a semi-prototype or something torpedo that is sort of capable of this. Don't remember all the details though

OICW-objective individual combat weapon

Yeah i use that weapon all the time on Delta Force Landwarrior, it kiks major ass because it is highly accurate. But yeah i think i'd rather have an m16 or an m50 sniper rifle w/ a sidearm anyday. oh and some frag grenades 2

I believe there was speculation that the Russian sub that went down about a year ago was carrying prototypes of these torpedoes - there were theories that the accidental detonation was what caused the sub to go down, and/or that the torpedoes were the reason they declined outside help in recovering the sub.

these things are extremely cheap for what they do, 10-12k a rifle. they wont be even in the ranks of special forces until 2006 however. they are made by HK, everyone knows them
