Um, the proof was in your hands. Just throw the snake into a bucket. Walk into your office and do some research, with a specimen, it's very easy to find what kind of snake it is. With the info, and deeming it harmless, you can easily bring it somewhere off your property. Free it somewhere else if you feel uncomfortable with it in your yard... geez.

Think before smacking it with a shovel..

You = MORON

Any confirmation on species?

Poisenous?

I though you could tell by the shape of the head, slits in eyes if they were poisenous?

-edit-

DUH, why not just check for fangs? That would be a sure fire way.

Just for the record, snakes are not poisonous. They are venomous. Get it right people - think about all the idiots that have read this thread and are now spreading misinformation.

That is all. Carry on.

that black rat snake was more beneficial to your yard than you realize. what an ass. The snake was dealing with a typical overreacting uninformed idiot.

And can you show me proof that it is indeed a Rat snake.... ?

Highly doubt that I'm the asshat here, I've only seen probably a couple hundred of those snakes on my parent's property (20 acres) over the last 15 years.

heh, this is interesting watching you trying to defend your ill-informed actions against those who know better..

Uh... From Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary:

VENOMOUS: having a venom-producing gland and able to inflict a poisoned wound

POISONOUS: having the properties or effects of poison

So to which incorrect web site were you referring?

Spidey07,

Thanks for the link, I have been there before when I was looking for the species. The one that looks the closest to me is a CottonMouth, bu this was long and skinny compared to the pictures of short and thicker on that site. Markings match that of a CM.. siz just dont go with it though....

You got many opinions here some very informative and I hope you're not disregarding them.
I beg you not to whack at the next one just because it comes out of its hole or out of spite.
You have the internet do more research to handle the situation in a much better way and if you are able to confirm your suspicions by all means whack away and post some more pics of your kill

but for some reason I sense your being biased on what you really think it is.

Could be... But I don't feel I am.

I know its a 6' snake and it was near my child's play area. She knows not to mess with such things, but I am not going to have her see it out there and be scared half to death to go outside and play.

Heh, last post befre i go.

Believe it or not, I don't think children are all too scared of this stuff. Infact, they might be curious enough to approach it, it's the parents that winch and scream when that happens.

All in all, you didn't have to kill it. Rather, teach your children to accept nature instead of fearing it. Granted that if it was a venomous snake then by all means, remove it from your property.

OMG where do these people come from.. People don't seem to read the rest of the thread...

First of all, the chances of having a venomous snake in North America is very very slim(only Rattles in the desert) and the notably the CottonMouth which is much different in size and appearance. Secondly, snakes don't bite people on a regular basis.

Just like sharks, they don't eat or bite people on a regular basis. It's extremely rare for such a case, and this applies to snakes as well. Just because of it's appearance, there is a this bias against them. All figments of peoples imaginations and fears.

Sigh..

Which lead to killing like this case here.

I wonder how many dolphins are killed each year mistakened as a shark?

This thread is so damm funny. I only read the original post and the first page but all you people acts like you're angels.
Its like you've never kill some type of animals before.

It seems that if we kill small little things like roaches, spiders, flies, etc....its ok cause they're small and they're disgusting.
But God forbid if we kill anything remotely resemble a normal creature, we're barbarics.

Slim chance or not, all it takes is just that one time and your ass is grass. Granted there were many other options for removing the snake but if it came down to it, I rather kill the snake first than risk the safety of my kid or family trying to figure out whether or not if it's a "safe snake".

Most of you guys are funny or just like to pick fights....... JzL GOOD JOB
 Good job for protecting your family. Although it would have been better if you woulda left if, you had to do what you did. You people act like this guy commited a crime! Any snake in my yard = a dead snake. I dont have the time to sit and ponder if it is venemous or not before it bites me and kills me. Haha. Actually, the 13 years I have lived at my house I have only killed 4 snakes (All but one was a rattler!). I remember I killed a HUGE that actually came after me!!!. Having grown up in NC, and being chased by numerous snakes as a kid, has attributed to my hatred of snakes. If it looks dangerous then its dead PERIOD. Some of you guys need to lighten up and give this guy a break.
