Check That New HD Warranty

Just bought two Western Digital hard drives, both on 6-25-2012. I decided to register the drives with WD, something I've never done before(you don't have to register a drive for warranty service). One, an RE4 Enterprise drive checked out, but the other, a Green EZRX with a two year warranty, showed the warranty period expired on 4-21-2014. Seems I got shorted a couple months on the warranty.
Bad enough the warranty periods on most hard drives have been shortened, now you have to check to make sure you get the skimpy warranty that is advertised.

Well its 2 years in the EU on all electronic from the day you buy it in a store.

Its not like they're manufactured the same day you purchase them, that's one of the downfalls of having a serial number based warranty, however you never have to look for your receipt.

Can you just show them your receipt and get the warranty length applied to the date of purchase?

Thats weird, i think i have 5 year warranties on both of my 150gb Vraptors, already had to use it once and the process was fairly straightfoward.

the only date the manufacture has for a drive is the date of manufature.

To extend it those few months, you need to register the drive and given the date of purchase (may need proof in some situations I think), but then the expiry date will extend those extra few months.

Since my first HDD (somewhere circa 1986/87,) I have never had to exercise a warranty. Have had only three drive failures in that time, and they were all beyond any warranty. Dumb ass luck? Careful treatment? BSOM! But, I'll take it.

Western Digital has a tool on their website that tells you the expiration date of the warranty on a particular drive, I'm assuming that's what they are using to determine the end date of the warranty. I have emailed them as well as Newegg about it, I'll see what they say.
May be some kind of mistake or error on WD's part, but I will keep that receipt, that's for sure. Hate to have to send the drive back to Newegg within the 30 day exchange window because of it. Western Digital has always done OK by me, I'm hoping they make it right.

They will accept the receipt as the start date of the warranty, it's a bit more of a hassle, but they have to honor it.

It's not a mistake on WD's part, it just means Newegg has a bit older stock, or didn't rotate it. When was the drive manufactured? They usually start the warranty over three months later. For example, I bought a retail Western Digital Black (WD1001FALS) at Best Buy in May. Manufacture date is Feb 13, 2012, warranty expiration according to WD's site is June 6, 2017.

You can email your receipt and update your warranty period.
I have just done that. It takes about one month to show your updated information.

This is nothing new.. its how its always been if I recall correctly..

They honor the manufactured date on the hard drive UNTIL you contact WD with the purchase date.

.. and with a WD Green drive, you want 100% of that warranty, since it seems its not that uncommon for these drives to only last 1.5-2.0 years.. at least judging by the older generation of WD Greens, we'll have to wait to see how the latest generation of them fare in comparison.

I just bought a Seagate/Samsung drive with a _1_ year warranty. Checked the warranty expiration and it gives me less than 10 months. Not a smart move on my part, but it was a fairly good deal.
