I second Patrickj. I usually don't do this but I believe this time it's needed..
SINGLE USE CC NUMBERS ARE THE WAY TO GO!

I've used both Amex and MBNA single use numbers, I prefer the MBNA program. One advantage of the MBNA program is that you can also put a time limit on the number's use. I keep it in my system tray at all times.

Well debit cards ARE protected if they carry the VISA or MC logo's. VISA even had a comercial advertising this awhile back, this has been in effect for about a ?year?. So whether credit or debit you are still only liable up to $50, and at that, lots of places places say $0!!!

I say we invade right now and kick some commie gangsta $ss. I reviewed just one of my monthly reports and noticed that a well known company over here had overcharged my account for $170.00. I suggest that you review your account monthly...... I called the company and they quickly corrected it.

If you have an MBNA card go to http://www.mbnashopsafe.com and it allows you to generate account numbers w a preset limit and expiration date. They're single use in that they can be used only by one merchant but multiple times at the same merchant. Example, you could set up an acct number for your ISP. Let's say they bill you $20 a month. You can set an acct w a limit of $240 that expires a year from now.

Alot of the credit card companies out there are starting to use this technology and most of them license it from the same vendor http://www.orbiscom.com.

MBNA also goes by IBS or Individualized Bankcard Services so if you have an acct through there it will also work.

...and to the guy who said use a debit card....no way...you have absolutely no rights if someone fraudulantly uses your debit card. With credit cards the most you could get nailed for is $50 and any decent (translation=not the commercials you see during Jerry Springer) cc company will guarantee your not responsible for anything. I have the option of generating this acct number when I make online purchases but you know what? I'll be damned if I really care if someone uses it because I know I won't have to pay for it. There's so much online fraud now all you really have to do is call them and, at worst, fill out a form and send it to them stating you didn't make the charge and off it goes.

BTW, if you have an MBNA card and have a credit line over $15K call them and said you want to convert it to a Quantum account. It's new and is supposed to be the next thing past platinum.....no annual fee and free concierge service. They found 2nd row seats at the Eagles/Giants game for me.

SoulAssassin,

Thanks for the info on the Quantum account...I'll have to check that out. What is the apr for this account. I have a nice low fixed rate that I'd hate to lose...

wow, time to upgrade my Platinum to Quantum.

Wonder if they are gonna do a credit inquiry for the upgrade.

Trust me, they won't do a credit check on the upgrade unless you ask for a credit line increase. The APR is the same as what you have now, however, either before or after you get the upgrade call them back and tell them you have an offer for 9.9F from First USA and were thinking about canceling your account.

There's also a Travel Rewards (aka miles) program for Quantum, $75 annual fee however there's no cap on the number of miles you can earn per year like some other cards. Also, for the ultra rich (and I'm sure there's alot of them on a deal site) most other cc's have a cap of 100K on the credit line. You can go up to a million on this.

RE: Visa/MC Debit cards - check with your bank. Not all banks will cover losses on a debit card. Of the 3 that I use only 1 has this coverage. According to one CS person, alot can depend on if the charge went through as a "credit" or "debit". (Like at the grocery store and the check out machine asks that question when you slide your card. Also some banks charge a fee for each debit withdrawl) Some online companies make this decision for you based on if their database decides the CC # is a debit card. Paypal is one of the companies that does this. Antway per the CS person a "debit" charge is no different than a check, while a "credit" charge MAY carry the protection of the VISA/MC brand backup. But you must check with YOUR bank.

I am getting tired of checking every transaction. It can become a real pain in the butt if ya make a lot of transactions. I think my family must spend 90% of our expenses through online merchants and accounts. The gov. should just increase the penalty... like cut their hands and feet off. That would keep them from causing too much more trouble in this world.

Discover card also offers the one time use credit card numbers through their "desktop" if anyone wants to try that out for online purchases. I haven't used it yet, but believe that you can have one credit card number for a certain etailer, and different numbers for other etailers. So, you could still keep your account number on file at your favorite stores and be protected.

Hey fornax

You're right. I guess I jumped to conclusions because I remember Minsk being near Russia in Sid Meier's Civilization...lol. Guess what guys, EddieBauer.com just gave me a call that an order was placed to Belorussia. I'm insulted. He could atleast have more taste with my card. I mean that's like stealing a car to go to a hamburger joint. He could atleast order himself a suit or something. What a puts. lol.

Assuming one has a good credit and is mature enough to pay the bills what, if any, advantages does a debit card offer?

The one thing I like about the debit card is the fact I am now debt free.
Cause I can not spend more then what is in the debit account. Now I can walk into places like CC and see those huge HD TV's ..... cause u know stuff like that starts talking to ya. " Com' on what is another 4 grand on your card " " Take me home u need me ,u worked hard you r do a new toy.....Not to mention the salepeople " Well sir we will not bill ya for a year from now. Payments will only be 97.45 a month. Plus a year from now u would have gotten a raise....etc etc etc... I do not have to mention Christmas time do I ??? God how I hated the month of March. When the mail box was full of THICK bills do to the Christmas spirit. Nope they can not pull me in no more.

But this darn forum does ! LOL

Credit cards were killing me.... 5,0000 credit line up to 10 up to 50 grand. Not to mention the Sears, JC Pennys,5 gas cards, home depot etc etc etc had them all. Now only two Home Depot and one gas card for emerency use only.

As for my debit card I checked with the bank today I have a Visa Checking Debit card. It carries $0 liability if reported within 11 business days or up to $50 maximum liability there after. And the bank keeps a watch out. Last Jan with BUY.COM, Staples etc deals I made 5 buys late @ night by the fourth it was put on hold. Red flaged by the system. Bank called me in the morning asked about the charges cause it was not my normal. Told them it was ok in which they called Staples told them hold was off to release orders.

Well that this man's .02 cents anyway.
Sorry 4 the typo's I busted my butt today and to tired to look this post over.

I noticed 8 charges all on the same day from "Global Telecom Moscow" on my credit card 2 months ago, Capital One immediately cancelled my card and issued me a new number. Is this the same guy that's hitting you guys?
I've never bought from Egghead, although I did register with them a long time ago.
I haven't had to pay the charges, but the fraud investigation is still ongoing, I hope the catch the jerk!

Hawkeye, be sure your bank hasn't added an overdraft feature to your debit card. This happened to my son; he inadvertently made 4 charges (total less than $30)after his balance went to zero. The bank gleefully covered the four overdrafts and charged him a $25 service charge for each one. So he got billed $100 in fees for less than $30 total overdraft.

Yup, I got hit twice from "2/24/2001 REB-SYSTEMA $30.77", they said it was in Russia. Don't think I've used Egghead, that was there first question, but then he said Amazon and Onvia ?? They'll be sending me a new card next week So check your cards, one was still pending so they should be able to cancel payment to Russia for that one for sure.

DONT USE A DEBIT CARD!! EVER FOR ONLINE PURCHASES!!

If all the warnings posted here arent good enough already!

Yes for people who cant control their credit card spending habit, and like not being able to spend more than they actually HAVE, not using a credit card is good, but its SO FOOLISH..

Your checking account can go into overdraft if a thief gets a hold of your debit card...the bank can take the money from your other accounts, checks youve already written WILL BOUNCE, you can get late fees on your mortgage and car payments, etc!

With credit cards, if theres a dispute, you simply write the letter, and you DO NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THE DISPUTED ITEMS, whereas with debit cards you already lost your money out of your checking account and have to fight to get it back...EVen if they have the Visa/mastercard logo, you still do not have the same protections as credit...

and some ATM cards DO NOT give you fraud protection, whereas all credit cards do...and some have 0 liability...meaning you dont ever have to pay 1 CENT of a disputed charge

Debit cards are most often used by younger people who cant control their spending or cant get a credit card or pay too much interest...and dotn have to worry about things like paying mortgages or car payments from their checking accounts...but TRUST THE EXPERIENCED PEOPLE ON THIS FORUM, and DONT USE A DEBIT CARD!!!

DONT USE A DEBIT CARD!!

DONT USE A DEBIT CARD!!!

Got it?

Woot thanks for reminding me... normally I don't even check my bill, but this month I realized a place called Ventura TV in my area that was closing down just charged me TWICE for the same amount causing me to bounce a check. JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZE I am so angry right now, and I can't call the bank to resolve this as it's too late in the evening!!!!

get a life GoldenTiger...this thread is intended to help the people that make the hot deals here possible, that you might even take advantage of...not too mention all of the thousands of others here.

i wish all of these lame-o's would just chill out instead of posting in every other thread "NOT A HOT DEAL". this forum was built on HELPING out each other, not knocking on the thread and it's poster if it has good and reasonable intent.

I've recently seen Visa comercials on the tube saying they will cover (any fraud) your purchase 100% for anything you buy on the internet. I've used mine for the last 5 years and haven't had any problems -so far- but I'm not too worried about it since they will take care of it.
