rotflol... from what I've seen the geek squad couldn't cut it... also, make sure you add that program that yells "HEY EVERYBODY - I'M LOOKING AT P***O OVER HERE!". And change the desktop IE shortcut to point to this.

My bro used to work at BB and said that to be in Geek Squad you have to take a test. I'd love to take that test just to see how retardedly easy it is.

I shouldn't knock BB, though. Afterall, they did save me from retail hell! About 4 or 5 years ago I applied for a job in their computer department and they said I didn't have enough sales experience. So I just went out and got a job as a sys admin making far more with better hours and less hassle. Funny thing was I probably knew more than any employee there and I have excellent people skills. But I wasn't worth it since I apparently didn't have enough experience trying to sell someone a $30 USB cable for their new printer!

I took the test, very easy. They offered me a job on the spot. Oh well, I just laugh about it now.

can you go in and apply to work directly in the geek squad or is it a promotion type thing from their service desk?

I knew someone who got me an interview at the headquarters, so I am not sure. I guess it depends on what kind of job you are looking for.

Oddly enough, I failed the personality profiling test 3 times when I was applying at Best Buy. They said they couldn't even look at my app without me scoring "green" on both sections and that the computer would automatically delete it. I even had my gf watching me the 3rd time I took it and we agreed on all the answers.

I had the same experience, though: 2 weeks later I got a much better job in tech support for a small company. I too was saved from retail hell.

A lot of retail companies such as target use the same test thing, I gotta wonder if there's an answer key floating around somewhere...

Its a personality test which helps weed out the "unethical" and "socially challenged" individuals. At least thats what an Albertson's manager once told me many years ago. Apparently, many retailers use this as a weeding out tool. I think there are 3 versions of the same test given which mix around the questions sequence. FBI and other government agencies have their own version of the same test. Don't worry, just because you fail, it doesn't really make a you a bad person)

I was sure mad that they wouldn't let me interview anyway. When a test full of ambiguous questions decides that I wouldn't be a good employee before I ever talk to a real person something is wrong somewhere. One step closer to a Gattaca scenario where somebody simply submits a DNA sample instead of interviewing for a job.

I hope I get the coupon.

I have a P166 compaq desktop. I'll load Win95, IE5.5 AOL Version, hook it straight to the cable modem without the firewall, and get all the spyware and adware I can find. Ohh yeah, to make it more fun, bring down the ram to one chip, and take out the cd-rom drive. That should be amuzing....

For those asking about working for Geek Squad, there is no test, per se, to get in. That is, Corp doesn't require anyone to take a test. If they're having you take a test, then it's just part of the interviewing process. But there is no intrinsic requirement to get into Geek Squad. I worked for Geek Squad. I'm quite certain that I could come up with a test that 90% of the techs here couldn't ace (but doing so would be silly as you all have the internet to aid you during the test).

Don't get me wrong; I'm not glorifying Geek Squad, by any means. Most of the techs there weren't all that great. Our store brought a guy from inventory and made him a tech because they were removing his job title. The guy saw "redo" on one of the service orders and thought it meant "reformat" and deleted all of the customer's data.

But don't bust the techs' balls because you know more than them. Geek Squad techs know enough to fix the home user's computers. That's enough for the company and the rate of pay is sufficient for the knowledge the techs have. If you're some super-duper tech, then $12/hr is probably beneith you. Best Buy also has techs that know a thing or two more than the average tech ... guys that have their CCNA and whatnot. In California, BB has 5 of them. They each make $22-25/hr & 40hrs/wk. Average network administrator with a CCNP makes about $90k/yr. After bonuses, these guys are making 50k/yr ... so again, rate of pay is very sufficient and competitive for their knowledge.

Cliffs:
Geek Squad techs are low-level techs, but know enough to fix average user's problem.
Best Buy does not issue a standard test to get into Geek Squad.
I rambled a bit about rate of pay and how it's sufficient for what the guys know.

It's just a diagnostic check... they won't actually FIX anything for your 59 bucks, just try to sell you on the maintenance and upgrades. Don't waste your time.
