You sure its not that there's money in college sports?

sure there is. its also what i said.

because there are sports that do not bring in money (i would debate that cheerleading is really needed or brings in money).

Wow...you're an awesome dad...you're here bitching about putting money towards cheerleading for your daughter but didn't you start a thread about 4/20 music and getting high around your kids? Priorities...heard of them much?

Yeah I know what they are.

I'm just wondering why they A) have to cost any money and B) how being a cheerleader helps you become, say, an astrophysicist.

Also if its any extracurricular activity what about boozing and wenching?

You are obviously hopeless

If you can make boozing and wenching a legitimate club in HS, by all means

Marijuana is expensive man.

Glad I'm not the only voice of reason in this thread

I pray that my kids' extracurriculars only cost me $720. Who knows how much these things will cost 14 years down the road.

The title IX law requires equal opportunity in sports for males and females but not many females want to play American football.

Why would I have kids? Raising kids is expensive.

My favorite part is how OP argues that raising kids is not expensive. LOL

That they are. I just like to ask folks cause it helps to know who knows what they're talking about and whose talking out of their asses.

What a great parent, hold her back, fuck extra curricular activities needed for a good college, you need weed money.

Moron, you help your kids grow and be prepped for the real world and this is part of that, maybe you need to invest in condoms.

Well, it isn't expensive if you plan to do nothing for your kids like he is... Imo, if you can't afford having your kid do something as basic as cheerleading, you have no business having kids in the first place.

I do love the parents that rationalize and justify their poor position(no pun intended) by saying how not helping their kid is really helping them!

I must have missed the post where he said he'll do nothing to help his kid out. He's doing the right thing, $720 is way too much money to be spending willy nilly. For folks that don't think it's a lot, you don't truly appreciate the value of a dollar. Growing up, I had to mow lawns to raise money to buy my baseball glove. Once my parents saw I was serious about playing ball, they paid for everything else (cleats, bat, bag, etc). Same with the marching band. Paid for my own sticks initially and once I started competing, my parents paid for everything else.

720 dollars :awe:

That's insane, and I wouldn't even suggest her to work to do this, but rather help her see that at this cost, it's an unreasonable pursuit.

There must be cheaper extra-curricular activities, that are also fun and in a similar vein. Make sure it's one where you can provide the uniform, or where it's not necessary to have, so you can thrift-shop around, or just get her whatever equipment she needs, without having to pay for some ridiculous low-volume printing.
Uniforms are bad anyway. They represent repression and are the anti-thesis to liberty, the prime US-value.

Right. In this wacky world, the person that works hard to make more money, who saves and prepares for the future and for his kids is the one that doesn't truly appreciate the dollar... and the one that doesn't save and prepare for the future or their kids does know the dollar!

It's SO easy to see who was raised/is spoiled by their parents and who wasn't.

Teaching kids what it takes to make money/paying for their own things (while still contributing in some way) is a lost art.

Ever time I see Shadows post I get a feeling he is one of those fist pumping NJ guido/live in parents basement/$30k millioneer.

It's good comedy though, what can I say.

PS. I was working at 13 and paying $50 a WEEK in rent. Although I did hate it when I was young, I now appreciate what my mother has done. It was a valuable lesson!!!

There is NO such a thing as being financially ready to have a child. EVER

I wouldn't even be here if most people did that. Both of my parents come from upper middle class families and both had higher education......yet in the country we lived in..... they never even had a REMOTE chance to be financially stable (WITH jobs too) OR ANY kind of future.

Guess what, they still had me and my brother and we turned out JUST fine.

Just like I had my kids very young (and no I was no where NEAR ready) but guess what, after 14 years I have been working 3 careers/own a home and I'm doing JUST fine.

So you just keep waiting until you have your $150k in the bank for your one child's college fund and "1 million " dollars our society tells you that you will need to raise a child.

If your idea of parenting is handing out cash for every little thing your kid wants and jumping at every time they require money, you are in for a shock when they grow up.

Good luck with parenthood.

I support my children very well, but I make it clear that I'm not an ATM and they do NOT get hand outs/have to work for their own things. If they do well/behave etc Im MORE than willing to CONTRIBUTE. But no "free" rides......they will take you for a ride AND some (I see it with my kids friends ALL the time). There is no LIMIT.

Correct, it's the approach we are trying to take.

She came back from school yesterday and said she did well in Shotput/Javilin throw and running. Wanted to do track.

I was thrilled and recommended that she pushes for that vs cheer leading.

OP, you tout you have been married for blah blah number of years, had your kids early, yadda yadda, are an expert parent, bitch and moan, kids are soooo expensive, etc...I hope your daughter brings you to task with the fact you begrudge her for wanting to do cheerleading while you're toking it up around the house. What tune would you sing then? Yeah, $720 is a good bit of money but a responsible parent would spend that on the child before pot.

In my book of many years of parenting and family life, a respondible parent doesn't bitch and moan about the costs involved in an extra-curricular activity their kids want to participate in while they're toking up. A kid looking to the parents to help pay for the costs of cheerleading or other athletic/active endeavour trumps a parent burning $$$ toking up around the house any day of the week.

You fail.

Quoted in case he tries to edit saying he CAN afford anything. Poor man

I see you keeping track of every little word I say now.

I'm flattered, didn't know I had a such a huge following.

If I really wanted to pay for it, I would. But I like to stick to my budgets/plans I make.

So perhaps I should've said "I don't really want to pay for that". Can I afford it? Sure

It feels overly expensive/unnecessary and idiotic to pay so much for this sort of thing. If schools want to rape parents financially, go nuts, but I'm not going to be one to get raped.

If my daughter wants it bad enough, she will do it (and it sounds like she is already taking steps to make it happen...which I'm happy for her).

You see, if you were to be like your average parent you would hand over the money and your daughter wouldn't even know that you paid ANYTHING....forget about actually realizing how much it is or what it takes.

One day you will realize that throwing money at kids is NOT being a parent. Parents take time to teach children value of money and what it takes to earn it so that they don't become spoiled little brats like you.
