None of the schools in this area, as far as I'm aware, charge students to participate in sports. Though, the students do have to pay for some uniforms. Football, basketball, cheerleading - most sports - the uniforms are returned to the school and used for several years. Swim team - had to buy the uniform for our son. ($50ish)

As much as cheerleading might cost, I'm glad that school taxes aren't being used to pay for it. Pay to play should be the rule for all extra-curricular activities.
I disagree. Extracurricular students result in better rounded students. Further, students with extracurricular activities (versus doing nothing) are more likely to get accepted into universities. Denying students the ability to participate in such activities because their families can't afford them is tantamount to discriminating against them when it comes to college admissions.

Highschool sports cost more to play these days.

Registration fees are higher
Equipment is no longer provided
Mandatory summer camps
Etc.

I don't think this as an appropriate response, but considering the overwhelming number of parents I've spoken to they didn't have any clue either as to the cost of raising their mistakes in the public school system.

Newsflash yourself and be honest and let us know if you know what it costs to raise a child in the public school system on a per capita, per year basis. I'm not even a parent and I know what it is costing me.
I think the latest figures put it at $250k+ for 0-18. My daughter is 14mo and I'm already putting away $600/mo for college. If you're complaining about property taxes I don't know what to tell you. Around here you can just move to a neighboring town for lower property taxes (with vastly shittier schools) if you don't have kids.

I was in JROTC in high school and it didn't cost me a penny! HAHAHA

But seriously, you can buy a cheerleader top and skirt for 100 bucks.

What do swimmers wear for a uniform? Speedos?

Sounds about average for highschool cheerleading.

This. I have a set of twin nieces, and they're in the Jr. Peewee cheerleading squad, and they have to pay approx. $500 EACH to cheer. This is to cover costs of the uniforms, travel expenses, and a % goes to whatever booster club etc. $720 sounds right for HS. Beleive me, when my wife told me this is how much it would cost my daughter when she gets of age (if she wants to do it of course), I just about fell to the floor.

Yeah, sticks are cheap, but if you want to plays, say, a saxophone, you're talking $100/security deposit, then $50-100 per month rent (unless you want to buy a used one for $1,000+), plus the cost of the reeds. And then pray do you don't dent it, lose it or break it.

And for the year-end trip, you either sell those fundraising products or pony up another couple hundred dollars. Then there's meals for the game, meals for summer practice, uniform costs, shoes, rain gear, huge duffel bag...I was sad and happy to see both my older boys quit band after a year. However, my youngest starts with a baritone next year.

whoa! its that expensive where you are at?

for my daughter to rent a instrument its $50 a school year and $30 for the summer.

also if you look around you can find good instruments cheap. we got my daughter a nice wood clarinet for $300

I have always had to pay for the sports i was in. in high school wrestling was $50 fee. then you had to buy shoes and headgear. Baseball was $50 registration fee $100 uniform.

and hell that was 20 years ago.

it does seem high. though nothing insane.

my daughter is on the gymnastics team and that gets expensive.

we have monthly cost. just for practice. then for the tournament seasons is $1200. that covers entrance fees and coach fees. We then have to buy a leotard+warm up. we got her a set this season and it cost $250 for the leotard (cheap!) and $150 for warm ups. she outgrew her leo. bah.

though there is a booster club. You might look into that. last year we didn't get a full year to help offset the cost. even the 3-4 months we had reduced it $300

agreed. though music is as important for kids as sports.

My daughter plays the clarinet and we have a old organ. She wants a picalo and a keyboard now though. heh

Well of course you have an OLD ORGAN...
I don't think you should be letting your daughter play on that though...

OP, it's one of the American dreams for girls...become a cheerleader, marry the quarterback, live happily ever after...too bad it almost never works out that way.

you are correct, but they usually don't have enough instruments. And generally Freshmen are stuck with renting from a music store. Saxophones are never cheap.

My wife was a cheerleader coach at a college and is now at a private high school. Before coaching, she was a competitive cheerleader since she was 8, so unfortunately, I know more than I care to about this subject.

Cheerleading is extremely expensive sport to be in. Just to have someone compose the music and write the choreography/routine can push $10k easy. If they travel then the price goes up. My father in law said they used to spend $5k a year for just cheerleading when she belonged to a private gym and traveled.

Good luck!

$720?

You're a poor shitty parent

I hope your daughter makes your life a living hell by playing with boys in your house, getting pregnant, or something that would make you wish you just dropped the small amount of money.

There is a reason why all of the other parents started writing a check like it was no big deal and you're on here complaining about it. I think you know what that is.

Someone else said she would now become a porn star, which is much worse.

A stupid comment on ATOT means nothing, I don't really mean the pregnant part but I do truly hope she makes his life a living hell. Teenage daughters are not to be f*cked with. Thats why there are so many spoiled daddy's girls, because the alternative is much worse.

wow..fuck you.

You're offended because you have a daughter too? Everything you've said shows you're raising your daughter right. It may be a little bit of money but its not that big of a deal. As others have said $720 is like 4 school books or a smart phone or a laptop. I bet the OP won't be helping his daughter with college at all if $700 is all of a sudden a big deal

Ugh your post (and if you're being serious, you as well) is so retarded I can feel my IQ lowering just reading it. How many kids do you have?

If we are to determine whether or not cheerleading is worth it, we will require pics of daughter

Are you in a race with Alke or something?

Hopefully none, but chances are....few.
